I fitted a new rear extension housing seal to my gearbox that was supplied by some rip off Aussie gearbox fella on eBay.... The tailshaft had new uni's and was balanced professionally. The car has done approx 50klms and is dribbling oil out of the rear seal.

Could I have damaged it when fitted the tailshaft in? I assume the seal supplied was just something generic from a bearing shop. Is there a particular seal that should be used?

Did you lubricate the yoke before inserting it?

I believe I did with grease. But I think I pulled it out again when I found the diff shop fitted the incorrect yoke to the diff... I cant remember if I greased it again when I fitted it the 2nd time...

Is there anything special about the seal? Could I just source another from a bearing shop?

The rare spares seal pictured looks very close to Holdens P/N- 3932255 genuine seal .

I have a number of these from my local dealer and they are all made in Singapore .

Covered by Holden warranty .

Would have to be better than a generic seal from x,y ,or z .

I hit em up. They dont stock them, but that P/N shows it listed. They will order me one in.

the bush the tail shaft runs in hasnt worn

The GMH Torana parts book lists a different number for the rear seal.

Is 3932255 the new P/N for it?

You have hit pay dirt .

Just checked my JUNE '75 LJ parts catalogue - P/N 3871649 has been crossed out and 3932255 has been added in it's place .

Looks more like the original with the metal backing. Check the part no.

Just thinking during my sleep overnight, was there a seal on the input shaft of these boxs? I know I replaced a circular gasket thats underneath the retainer for the bearing on the input shaft but I dont recall any seals?

Some do and some don't, those without simply use the bearing retainer to capture the oil and drain it back into the box through a hole in the front of the case - if you park facing downhill on too steep a slope the oil can run out... (never happens in practice)

Ah yeah,

This is my set up. So there wasnt a front input shaft seal. Just that gasket which I replaced, along with the rest of the gaskets.

Yep as long as you put the bearing retainer back on with the drain toward the bottom it won't be an issue

Would that be item 60 in the above pic? I didnt actually remove the input shaft or bearing. So hopefully its still in the correct spot???

I can't read those numbers...! I think its 65 on the far right (rightmost other than the bolts)

It has a recess in the back of it that lines up with the hole in the front of the case, there's also a cutout in the gasket for it.

Don't second-guess yourself now, even if you don't remember you probably noticed it and installed it the right way.

Oh righto yeah the end snout section. Yep Im pretty dam certain I got that fitted up correctly. I had that off to fit the new gasket underneath it.

Item #60 is the 4th gear synchroniser ring. The Aussie 4spd gearbox for a 1975 model should have the oil seal type clutch gear not the slinger type.

I'm pretty certain my box was 72. But it's definitely an M21. Confirmed the cluster number, ratios and twin groove input shaft etc.

If it's a 72 box then it would have originally been fitted with a slinger type clutch gear.

Did some reading Dave and now I know what your on about!!!!

I'm worried though, I didn't put any type of thread sealant on those 4 bolts that hold the bearing retainer in place.... Do those holes go right through into the case????

Can't remember off hand, don't think they do but I could be wrong. Pretty sure I've never had to seal the bolts.
