But how much would it cost to build a decent 202 ?
Obviosly with more power then standard but remember its a daily driver so it has to be within a reasonable budget :/

A Standard 202 Short Motor ( Block ) is still a Strong Motor ( I have given them a Hiding ),
You can re-kit a 202 Bottom End for 500 Bucks, invest in a 30/70 cam and a Good breathing Head. Dave I
p.s. it is the labour charges that put the price up on your build.
p.p.s. There are 202 builds on this Site for sure.

horsepower is just a matter of $$$$ ....so how fast would you like to go?
what do you currently have?
and what condition is it in?
don't forget to factor in the added costs for a gearbox/diff if you go the chev route
the bango breaks behind standard 202's...a 350 will destroy it

I like the look of this for $4000 delivered. Sounds like a good daily driver with that bit extra.

Keep in mind that it's basically just a long block, and to finish it off you'll need:
flywheel
balancer
fuel pump
dissy & leads
intake and carb(s)
air cleaner(s)
starter
alternator
extractors
All this can easily add up to another couple of grand. On a horsepower per dollar basis you'd almost certainly be better off with the smallblock, but some of us like the little sixes anyway.

Inlet opening and closing times. Old school way of measuring cams, not used anymore.
Cheers.

In just trying to decide what motor to go for in my hatch I know it's cheap to get a 350 crate motor

If you want a cheap, reliable and OK on fuel daily driver you can't beat an injected 304 conversion. Even cheaper if you run an auto like a TH350 or even the 4L60 from the donor car. Probably the cheapest and easiest conversion and hp uprgrade money can buy.

what in the hell is a 30/70 cam?
Intake opens 30 BTDC, closes 70ABDC, or in other words 280deg duration. Used to be the thing to have in a street 186 in the 70's. That's how cams were classiified back then, I bet I'm not the only one here that used to call Bert Jones Racing Cams and order a 30/70, or a 36/76 or whatever...

I had better catch up with the new technology spec's - @.50 etc.
The old cams were simple grinds back then and when you say a 30/70 cam, it would be a normal cam lobe design.
These Day's as oldjohnno has explained to us, is that the shape of the lobe has different characteristics to make a valve perform. Dave I
p.s. I just said a 30/70 cam for street cam to use - it would also give good fuel economy with a breathing head.

As above, either an injected 304 or a carbed small block would be ideal. If you go the 202 I suspect you'll be over it within a month of it getting on the road and talking about a V8 conversion. Do it once, do it right.

For $4K you can get a VN with injected 304 and a T700R4. Not much else of it will bolt in though.

Not everyone likes v8's.........Nor does everyone feel the need to put a v8 in absolutely every torana on the face of the earth.

Should be able to get one for half that, if not less, if you only want it as a donor.

yep and in standard form they are doughy as hell at low revs...not as bad as a gen3 but still....Then another 5k to make it all fit if your half competent on the tools, 10 if your not.

i'd rather a crate 350 than the hassle and bs that goes with a 304 conversion..

I've got a bit of a soft spot for the little sixes, and in my opinion they are a natural fit for the little LC/LJs, whereas these to me look out of proportion with a V8.
The LH/LXs on the other hand look "right" to me with a smallblock V8, so long as it all fits under the bonnet. Especially a hatch with big rubber, it just seems a natural fit. At the end of the day it's all just personal preference I guess, but for me I'd be dropping an eight in the hatch.

he said cheap ......OP hasnt really come back with a budget?

i'd rather have a old school 350 ls1's look and sound plastic
and the bs involved fitting them is worse than a 304
seriously you'd spend 3k+ just on your mounts/sump/wiring and fuel system ...then you still have your motor/ box/donor car costs
and you still haven't looked at diffs
