Just got the box out today.

I had the gasket and input cover fitted the right way with the drain lined up. But yeah... spot the leak.....

Ill make sure I seal the threads of the 4 bolts this time also.

Im not sure Im 100% happy with this.... Its a bloody tight fit over the main bearing and also very tight fit into the bellhousing in terms of its OD and also the height of the base of it is taller then original so unsure if the box with sit flush with the bellhousing...

Thinking about this some more, I do still wonder if I induced this leak when I had the car jacked way up in the air at the rear whilst fiddling with the exhaust and also replacing the rear extension housing seal.

The box being on such an angle would have allowed oil to pour back out the drain hole and if the gasket wasnt sealing 100% around that area its leaked past the gasket then down the face in between the box and bellhousing.

When I refit it Ill use some permatex No3 on the gasket.

Im not going to use the input cover Ive bought, Its just way to tight for tolerances in the bellhousing. Id have to wack it in with a mallet to confirm it fits 100% then I would be able to get it out..... I dont want to be trying to fit the gearbox and then find out it wont fit....

Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the four bolts that hold the input cover/bearing retainer onto the gearbox are?

Rubber lip always goes towards the oil........Regardless of where its fitted on a car.

Brilliant! Thanks guys. I just found the same specs in this crappy Max Ellery workshop manual.

Cant seem to find gearbox to bellhousing torque specs though?

And yep gunna seal them bloody bolts to!!!

Ellery's Crapodore manual says M20 - M21 transmission to clutch housing bolts 41 - 47 Nm

Hey brad. Old thread I know but can you tell me exactly what it was that you found to be the problem? I think I have the same issue with my box. Had oil pooling between the bellhousing and the box. Its now out and I want to make sure it's done properly this time. I see the lay shaft seal which was not done to my box when it was rebuilt. I also note that you used sealant on the retainer bolts but what did you do different with the retainer?

Ummm from memory it was just swapping over to the correct type of neoprene seal input shaft cover instead of the oil slinger type arrangement, sealant applied to the bolt threads, new gasket with No3 gasket sealant and also some goop over the exposed layshaft at the end of the box.

Makes sense. However I essentially had no form of a seal what so ever. There are two different part number input shaft covers. One that suits a neoprene seal and one that dosnt. I had a neoprene suited input shaft with a oil slinger type input shaft cover.

The thread on the input shaft is for the slinger to screw onto.
