I used to be a big poo-pooer of summernats, grew up loving it, thinking it was awesome, then heard the stories and saw the videos on youtube and from the age of 17/18 thought it was just a crock of shit, had the worst armchair opinion of how things were etc etc.
Went for the first time last year and had a great day (saturday) stayed till midway through the saturday night concert after supercruise.
This year I took Karlie (my Fiance for those playing at home) along with me, my mate and his old boy (flies down from brisbane every year)
She was smart enough to know that a tshrit and a pair of jean shorts that cover more than your asshole are appropriate attire if you don't want to be harrassed.
She'll come again next year as well.
I saw two pockets of bad behaviour. One was near the Eastside cruisers setup on Tuff St (wasn;t the eastside guys, just using them as a point of reference) Those blokes (and one feral bird) only appeared after about 4-5pm and were trying to cop a feel of any bird in a car, running out to try and encourage skids etc etc. Security kept telling them off, moving them back blah blah. (realistically, I think they needed to be ejected..)
The other was one drunk frOckwit who was getting in peoples faces and acting a tool in the bar tent off lunatic lane when it was floggin down with rain.
Karlie had a bunch of people bump into her in the elite hall just before lunch and her words "everyone was massively apologetic and friendly"
that was in a shed thats not airconditioned, with 40 thousand other people all sweating for a look at the cars that were packed too close together......
I think the lesson is dont think you are going to a music festival.... Dress appropriately and plan for some pockets of drunken frOckwits. The smart guys were avoiding Tuff St once it got later in the day and were just cruising the rest of the circuit. I dont think its right that girls have to cover up to avoid being attacked (verbally and physically) but some common sense goes A LONG WAY to keeping yourself safe.
Just to clarify a few other things that I noticed
The girl that got hit was a parking attendant, not a promo girl. HER facebook page mentions that she was trying to protect another girl when she got hit? Ryan's story is pretty different, but being impartial, im inclined to believe Ryans account.
The VL owner is a friend of a friend, was shot for SM magazine 2 days prior. Stopped in traffic and the last word I heard, the Territory driver was using his phone. The mower was not properly restrained in his trailer either. Brendyn was OK after the crash physically, but is a mental wreck. He had just dropped two friends off 100m before the accident occured.
The front seats were physically pushed forwards by the pressure of the rear seat. If there were rear passengers in the car, we would be looking at a double fatality, possibly more as the extra push forwards could have killed the front passengers.
Also, NOT a genuine walky. Long term build just finished, engineered and COMPLETELY insured as-is by Shannons. No idea on how the driveline faired.
