If you dont like what goes on don't go, it's your choice. I just dont agree with banning alcohol for the 99% of people who do the right thing. I am sure it is a family event but that doesn't mean certain age groups are not allowed does it. Fact is organizers just need to get tougher on these people so it doesn't ruin it for the rest of us.

You hit the nail on the head with this.

I have a good old laugh at people calling for Summernats to be alcohol free, its where a LARGE portion of the money is made and that money makes the event.

If you don't like it don't go, no one will care if you don't go.

I'll never go to another Summernats. We used to go regulary in my mates injected HJ ute. I remember the first time we turned up because throwing an injected 5litre into an older car was only new and his was one of the first in the country.
The last few years we went it amazed me you were not allowed to take alcohol in, but you could buy it there in glass bottles and cans. Being the hotest part of the year the beer tent had a line a mile long.
The last few years it started to become a joke, there had been a riot there one year in the early 90's and Northbourne Avenue was trashed.
Several times when we drove from one spot to the next, people would just jump in the back of the ute and expect a lift, they didn't give a shit about scratching your car or leaving empty beer bottles and other crap in the back. Other times they would surround the car and throw water on the ground and expect you to do a burnout. The security guards would look on helpless, and if you refused, the crowd would throw bottles at your car. It was a regular thing to see women abused for not getting their tits out and boyfriends bashed for defending them.
The last year we went the cops and the RTA had a massive blitz on any car that looked like it was going to the Nats. We were pulled up and taken to Merullan to be inspected. They found a few little things wrong with the car and gave us 21 days to fix it and sent us on our way. Others were turning up and arguing and having their cars taken off the road because they simply couldn't shut up and the inspectors looked even harder.
I remember one of the guys who had a car in the top 10 writing a letter to the organisers after having his car damaged and family terrorised while the security simply looked on.
Then came the final straw for me when one of the guys I worked with who was twice Street Machine of the Year winner, Ed Brodie, coming into work and saying some idiot threw a bottle at his car simply because it was a Holden. While security stood there and watched on, Ed walked up to the bloke and knocked him out. We decided that was the last time we would attend.
After Brads comment, it looks like nothing has changed which is unfortunate because it's not the car enthusiasts that cause the problems, it's the drunken idiots.

You only have to watch YouTube to see the idiots this year, not the place to take your pride and joy for others to amuse themselves.

I wanted to go for years, but what i see on YouTube is enough for me,nothing wrong with having a few drinks, but this place seems to attract the worst of them, and by the looks of the idiots, they probably hitch a ride.

Im not sure if you are saying that the money comes from alchol sales at the event and/or from sponsorhip.
Its often the thought of organisers that their event will disappear unless they keep with their current sponsor, well that's only if its a crap event and the event is being used more as a way for the sponsors to get to their target audience then they could by other means. It is also a case of the organisers couldnt be bothered doing the hard work and securing new sponsors.

Cigarette company sponsoring of sporting events comes to mind, tennis, golf, motor racing - when actual direct advertising of cigarettes was banned. All the organisers claimed their sport would die if they did the right thing and get rid of sponsors which were quite clearly morally wrong, well what happened when the sponsorhip was effectively outlawed by government....... other sponsors were found and the show went on!

re the wriiten off vl commodore? (dont read any further if you like these cars....)sorry have no affinity for them at all, they looked even more ridiiculous with skirts spoilers etc. another piece of ugly rubbish removed from our roads. :gun: :stirpot:

The damage to the vl was possibly worse because there was another car in front of it restrticting it from moving, but this would have been good for the occupants effectively reducing their forwards accel. The description that the territory didnt brake seems consistent with how it went over the top of the comm as it should have dipped quiet violently if under emergency brakiing), the comm being lowered probably didnt help things either.

Went to #5 for a day (passing through Canberra) and it was a great event. On the particular day I went, there were no burnouts (Saturday?) but the grass driving events were on. I also saw the cruise along Northbourne Ave which was great except for the guys running out in front of cars to stop them so they could laydown on the road to get a great picture (pre digital camera to guys). Boiling cars were not unusual as they were forced to crawl along. Many did only one lap and were not seen again. I saw no drunk clots then.

Now with what I have seen on hoon tube and stories on forums, they must bring them in by the truck load. Basically a profitable piss up with a car show attached it would seem. Maybe you need to pick your time of the day to visit to see the cars and then leave before the drinking becomes a problem.

Shame really.

I feel for the guy all that hard work and bang gone, hope is family were OK
Second thought is look at the damage on the current model Territory verses a late 1970s designed commodore, I dirve a late model car with 5 star ANCAP as my daily for a reason
aclochol and cars should never be mixed and dickheads spoil it for everyone because that is what they do

As an entrant camper for the past seven summernats, including this one, i have witnessed first hand alot of appaling behaviour as mentioned above. However there are usually two sides to a coin & only the negative aspect of this event seems to be the focus of attention. Sorry for the VL owner, as a car enthusiast, i respect any & all regardless of make etc & know how gutted i'd feel if it happened to one of my cars.

I forgot to add that even though i've been a summernats entrant, i don't get drunk & participate in asking women to show their boobs or other entrants to rip skids, i'm guilty of ripping the odd little skid here & there myself, but other than that i'm too busy enjoying the car show aspect of it with my family & friends.

The VB came out in 78, the VL was just an evolution of that.

IMO ..... the image of drunken yahoo's is not the image that true car enthusiasts need to portray. The nightly news has a enough horror stories and images on just how many people behave when drinking.

I am all for enjoying a car event, but negativity and stereotype images of irresponsible behaviour does little to put genuine car lovers in anything other than just another fringe element. I went to the first Summernats in Canberra and continued going for years, but the yahoo and drunken lout's drove me away. I am not 20 anymore and although I love a night of drinking I don't have any tolerance for louts, or stupidity that is dangerous and/or makes people uncomfortable.

I go to a pub to drink and a car show to enjoy the cars.

I used to be a big poo-pooer of summernats, grew up loving it, thinking it was awesome, then heard the stories and saw the videos on youtube and from the age of 17/18 thought it was just a crock of shit, had the worst armchair opinion of how things were etc etc.

Went for the first time last year and had a great day (saturday) stayed till midway through the saturday night concert after supercruise.

This year I took Karlie (my Fiance for those playing at home) along with me, my mate and his old boy (flies down from brisbane every year)

She was smart enough to know that a tshrit and a pair of jean shorts that cover more than your asshole are appropriate attire if you don't want to be harrassed.

She'll come again next year as well.

I saw two pockets of bad behaviour. One was near the Eastside cruisers setup on Tuff St (wasn;t the eastside guys, just using them as a point of reference) Those blokes (and one feral bird) only appeared after about 4-5pm and were trying to cop a feel of any bird in a car, running out to try and encourage skids etc etc. Security kept telling them off, moving them back blah blah. (realistically, I think they needed to be ejected..)

The other was one drunk frOckwit who was getting in peoples faces and acting a tool in the bar tent off lunatic lane when it was floggin down with rain.

Karlie had a bunch of people bump into her in the elite hall just before lunch and her words "everyone was massively apologetic and friendly"

that was in a shed thats not airconditioned, with 40 thousand other people all sweating for a look at the cars that were packed too close together......

I think the lesson is dont think you are going to a music festival.... Dress appropriately and plan for some pockets of drunken frOckwits. The smart guys were avoiding Tuff St once it got later in the day and were just cruising the rest of the circuit. I dont think its right that girls have to cover up to avoid being attacked (verbally and physically) but some common sense goes A LONG WAY to keeping yourself safe.

Just to clarify a few other things that I noticed

The girl that got hit was a parking attendant, not a promo girl. HER facebook page mentions that she was trying to protect another girl when she got hit? Ryan's story is pretty different, but being impartial, im inclined to believe Ryans account.

The VL owner is a friend of a friend, was shot for SM magazine 2 days prior. Stopped in traffic and the last word I heard, the Territory driver was using his phone. The mower was not properly restrained in his trailer either. Brendyn was OK after the crash physically, but is a mental wreck. He had just dropped two friends off 100m before the accident occured.

The front seats were physically pushed forwards by the pressure of the rear seat. If there were rear passengers in the car, we would be looking at a double fatality, possibly more as the extra push forwards could have killed the front passengers.

Also, NOT a genuine walky. Long term build just finished, engineered and COMPLETELY insured as-is by Shannons. No idea on how the driveline faired.

Orange, thanks for filling in some gaps. I can imagine your mate would be a wreck having just dropped people off, it's very very lucky indeed because they wouldn't be with us today. Mobile phones, when will people ever learn?!

Thanks for clearing that up. Im happy to admit that I didnt see any of those things unfold 1st hand.

The only incident that I saw first hand involving the girls, was from a group of young boys approx 16yrs old constantly grabbing girls breasts as they drove past sitting in the back of vehicles. This was taking place across the road from me but was in front of a security guard who was more concerned with drivers doing little skids. One girl was nearly toppled out the back and off the tailgate of a ute as she was grabbed.

Ive searched for the video footage of the all in brawl that erupted after the parking attendant got hit, its been taken down from fb. It also showed a few guys stealing merchandise from an exhibitor stand as the crowd went past.

I was there from 9-3 Fri/Sat and till lunch on Sun. Id say after about lunch time the crowds were getting pretty rowdy, girls being yelled at and called c*nts for not showing there breasts. I would hate to see how things panned out as night time fell.

Yes its easy to say, "if you dont like what goes on, then dont go"... well this trip was a surprise xmas present from my mrs, and to be honest I didnt have any idea it was anything like what I saw. So now I know what goes on, I wont go anymore. It was an experience that I can say I was a part of.
