Hi Natters,
Need to go in an Army Tank for protection.
I often thought of making a Torana out of 8 mm plate and chroming it. Dave I

What is the layout of Summernats? Surely you don't have to all stand there and watch the procession?

I'd love to go for the show aspect alone, I don't really care much for the burnouts, and thick crowds are annoying unless I'm at a concert/festival. But the actual car show is the only reason I'd go, but probably better to just go to Powercruise, Toranafest and MotorEx. But I'll go one day anyway to experience it for myself, as I'd be taking the family what would everyone recommend?

I live in Newcastle, I've had an XU-1 for 24 years, I've been to Torana Fest once, Summernats twice, I would'nt take my car to either. well I would drive to Torana Fest, but I'd be frOcked if i'd sit there all day.... Torana Fest is boring and has nice cars, Summernats is anything but boring and has nice cars..... the choice is yours to go or not...... Everthing that goes on there has been going on for ages, most if not everyone knows what to expect long before they've been to the Nats. Anyway you think the Summernats are bad, you should see our local Pub on a Friday Arvo..... Burnouts, Bikies, Lingerie Waitreses, Yobbos, Oh and Alcohol.... and it's best and friendliest Pub around.......... You'l never ever know if you never ever go.... , have fun before they Ban it or Tax it...

So anyway, Im thinking of going to the Sydney Mardi Gras this year. Apparently its a lively event with lots of colour, music and friendly people. I havnt been before but this guy I work with really wants to take me and he reckons he can get heaps of amyl nitrate which I have never tried either. He also mentioned this activity called "snoodling" which he suggested we try. Now I have a dilemma. I have access to the internet, have done research, watched youtube videos, read articles written by many people, asked my friends and the general feeling I get is that old mate wants to take me to Sydney, dance with poofs, frOck my arse and play funny games with my doodle.

I guess I should go with him hey. I mean, I havnt done it before so how do I know what its "really" like?

But seriously, who are we to judge a person based on what legally sanctioned event they find entertaining? Or dont find entertaining?

Its a very judgmental forum at the moment..........

The Nats is a lot tamer than it used to be. I would say I have to at least 10 since 1998, the burnouts and drinking used to go on all night now there done by 11pm, I miss the old days, If people don't want to do a skid they should be able to cruise without worrying about there car being damaged or their girls groped, cheers Aaron.

There is basically ten million things going on at once.

You have the "cruise route" which is the 2km+ track that runs the perimiter of the showgrounds,Tuff St and Lunatic Lane are the main two places where people gather and most of the pics/videos you see are taken.

Then you have the top 60 elite hall, basically a big pavillion full of the top cars, some come and go if they want to cruise, but most of the big dollar cars stay inside.

In the middle of the showgrounds you have the trotting track (used for supercruise after 6pm on saturday night) in the centre of the trotting track is the street car show and shine and grass driving events (seperate to each other of course)

Behind that is the burnout track and grandstands

Then you have a heap of other little pavillions full of parts suppliers, retailers, merchandise, new products etc etc.

I'v missed heaps, but thats the basics

If you look at a heap of the pictures from tuff St, you'll see where most of the burnouts were getting done, there is concrete blocks on both sides.

Further down the other direction, and on Lunatic Lane, there arent any (except for in the middle of the road) BUT there is frOck all in the way of "burnouts" that occur there. 99% of the big skids happen down the far end of tuff st.

Static display car shows leave me cold. They are kind of like a museum atmosphere, dead images of things that were once alive.
Once the summernats started I could never go back to a show and shine style event again.
The golden era for me was when I could go to the summernats every new year and the easternats at sandown every easter. Very different events but at least the shiny things were alive!
God I wish the easternats were still local.
Maybe thats just my honorary lebhood and greekhood speaking...

he's a lebbo!

Quick! back away slowly and give him your Nikes :P

wait.... Honarary? dammit. haha.

I enjoy static shows for a chinwag and catch up. Burnouts dont really get me all that excited as a sport, I'd much rather go turn some laps or watch some laps at a circuit, but it is a good every now and then sort of thing IMO.

I think half the attraction of places like Tuff St is the idea of danger and excitement, not knowign whats going to happen etc etc.

We live in such a bubble wrapped world, its nice to have some chaos (or atleast augmented chaos) every now and then.

Its atleast 75% of the reason why people do silly stuff on the streets, its all a big thrill really.

That section in the video is the only real open section with no concrete barriers on Tuff St... Hence that's why everyone congregated there... Last year it was much more open, and the ferals spread out a lot more (Making for a much tamer (But longer) Tuff Street.)

I totally agree!

I can spend all day at an event like Summernats/Easternats/powercruise etc, as there is something new always happening! The cars are doing what they are designed to do!

Static car shows are good, but I much prefer driving events! There is a reason I have only made the trek up to Toranafest once... It feels like I've 'been there, done that' already.
