Subject: Gold LJ '72 Two door Torana 'S' Drum front end, three on the tree manual with a 138.

Outcome: Tangerine LJ '73 GTR 202

Hi Guys and Girls,
After owning a Tangerine (i think that's what colour it was) 73 2 door 'S' over 20 years ago I have now have the urge, time and money to build up something similar, re-living the glory days of my youth. I've always had original looking cars so I plan to make this look as original as I can whilst doing most of the work myself at home. I've never had a job working with cars and just enjoy having-a-go. I was in Graphic Arts for twenty years before becoming a Handyman.
Looking for plenty of support and advice from members as this is no easy task had could take a few years.

I found this excellent specimen mid last year and have just got started on the re-build.

One of the challenges will be getting the boot floor back to original after it was cut out for the drop tank.

WEEK 1. Early January 2013
She sat for 6 months in my carport before starting and reversing down the drive then reluctantly getting back up the drive into her resto position. (Thanks to front drums binding)

I've stripped out the Interior and the engine is out. Now I'm not very quick at what I do so I've sped it up so you don't get bored.

Yes! that's my wife's back blocking your view of me. :-)

Rust wise there are no nasty surprises yet............Areas that need repairs are front guard sills, side sills, LH floorpan, and various small bits and pieces. Dents are minor with the worst being in the front panel below radiator.

Felt a bit overwhelmed with my shed full of parts, but after sorting and putting them away out of sight I've calmed down a bit. I think the trick is to focus on one thing at a time but always remember the big picture.

Cheers
Marty

Nice work Marty!

Can't wait to see what you do with this, I'm sure it will be fantastic when its done.

Have you sourced a 202 yet?

Don't forget the obligatory standing in the empty engine bay pics :spoton:

looks like you started out with a pretty clean car, i like the idea of the standard look but i also like the look of that droptank and the wheels in the first pic.

hope the engine isnt going to be too standard!

Yeah I reckon with the 202 and triples like you were talking about you may want to hang on to the drop tank :driving:

Hi all, thanks for the support.
Potta, I have a 202 block which I'll get checked to see if it's ok.

Stinga, the drop tank is the best looking one I've seen on an LJ/c, the down side is the butchery to the boot and I can't fit the original rear muffler. There is still a chance I will keep it. Lets see what it looks like when I get it out. May have to have a forum vote? Engine will be better than standard but must be drivable. Sprintmasters will go back on.

Gene & Gong, thanks for the offers of help, I'll get a list together of things I need in due course.

SLR V8 Loved Benny Hill as a kid, that would of been funny. Got the time lapse camera last week just for the build.

Markm thanks. I'm glad you didn't take up the offer of the rotisrie, Might need it sooner than I thought.

Welby, glad someone got the thread name pun.

Got the gearbox, steering wheel, heater, pedal box all out today.

Hey Marty what are you going to do with the BBH 138 ?

I must ask, what does BBH stand for?

I'm going to sell it, it's out of an LC I think. Engine number CB21####.
I've taken the sump and pick-up and stuck a HQ one on.

Started building the resto room today. Due to living in suburbia I thought it best to contain as much noise, dust, and fumes as possible.
I scored all materials so far for nothing off Gumtree and left overs from my work. This will be dismantled and chucked out once the car is finished so I didn't want anything too flash (waste of Torana money).

It's going to have two sets of double doors front and back so once painted it can be assembled in the workshop if required.

Hi Mark,
Not much action on the car, it's been all about setting up the "Cocoon" disregard Resto Room. The car has gone in ugly and will come out beautiful.

My theory is, this is going to be a long, sometimes stress-full experience, so why not make myself comfortable. Attached File  IMG_1916.jpg   50.57K   43 downloads

That looks mint mate, plenty of room and protected from the weather.

I think you're going to do fine with this car, you have a knack for getting sh!t done and doing It right.

Just keep soldiering on and it'll be done before you know it.

The doors are off and stripped. Drivers has a little rust but the passenger is like new in places.

Made my first custom tool for the car, very rough but did the job of removing the door pins.

Removed the drop tank and will be searching for boot floor and standard tank so please let me know if anyone has this. Worst case is weld in another floor and buy new XU-1 tank.

Using this tool I carefully got the stainless gutter trims off with-out too much drama.

The passenger footwell had a plate welded in so I cut that out in pieces only to find another plate below. Looks like I need a replacement panel.
