what he said ^^^

my advice to you is to clear under your boot and bonnet inside your doors and jams only,,, once you have finished your last lot of coats wet rub all swell peels from the body then buff for glass finish

turnpike-tangerine is a solid color so you dont need to use clear.

i find the best way to work acrylic is 3 coats on leave to dry for 2 days the rub 1 coat off

with my car we repeated this process until there was 12 coats on and 4 coats off

the end result was glass mirror finish,,, dont rush it marty or you will be kicking yourself

also when buying the paint i always buy 15lt

So far I've been told to paint 4 ways, all by experienced car people.
No clear at all.
Clear only on under sides.
Clear all over.
Clear all over and mixed in with colour

If anyone can tell me the pros and cons to any of these methods, please do.
Eg why don't we want clear on a solid colour but it's ok on metallic?
I appreciate all your input and just need as much info as possible before I make that decision.
First step is to paint it all in 3-4 coats, wait 3 days then rub back with 1200 wet. Everyone seems to agree with that step.
To help show colour I've put some paint next to the ToranaFest shirt. For those that have one.

Marty

You can clear over solid colours if you wish but it simply isn't necessary.

Metallic paints must have clear coats as the paint has to be left as it came off the gun. If you chop back the metallic before the application of clear then you will have a finish will that look splotchy and patchy.

The low gloss level on your panels looks like you have applied the final coat too dry in the hope of avoiding runs & sags.

As an experiment try a double flow coat on your boot lid for the final coat, ie apply one wet coat and then apply a second wet coat straight over the top. Don't allow the usual 10 minutes flash off between coats. Experience with a spray gun takes time.

Humidity, temperature, air pressure, gun nozzle setting, paint mix ratio and operator application speed will all have an effect on the finished off the gun gloss level.

Thanks Dave and Col, yes experience with a gun helps. I'm learning more each day. Been told I had the filter in the wrong way which would reduce paint flow. This is how I've been told it should be.
gy6etyry.jpg
Also I was told a bit more about how the adjusters work on the gun. Also about how you must let the paint flash dry 10 mins to let solvents evaporate. Even though paint feels dry after 1 minute....wait 10
Also sounds like you can have too many coats of acrylic which can cause issues, all about finding the right balance.
Hey Gene, I've painted the plenum. Used my little gun and jammed it in side at all sorts of angles.

4evy5u4y.jpg
apu5y7uz.jpg
I've got some time tomorrow and Saturday to experiment a bit more. Want to have it sorted before the final coats.
Have also been told to use a 1.8 nozzle but the paint shop I bought the gun off said 1.4 was the one. This should also help me get a wet coat down. Will have to buy a new gun, the nozzle set is only $40 cheaper than a complete gun. That'll be my forth gun.
Getting close.
Marty.

1.8 for acrylic lacquer. By the time you put a coat on and go through a pot of paint and mix the next batch that will be time start again well and truly ten minutes. What thinners are you using?

Hi Maz,
Geez, I don't know. I just go to the paint shops and tell them what I'm doing and they sell me a product.

Just had a look at the S&S web site. M6 is the good stuff.

Marty, if you don't mind me asking, how much did they hit you for the 20ltr?

They list a 4ltr at $583.00. Surely they can't be serious?

Good to hear, getting worried with all these questions.  Bought it about a year ago and from memory it was about $200

M6 is their top of the line product. The acrylic will dry of dull so what you have happening is normal. If you want to amp it up and save time on the inside edges, underside of boot and bonnet etc you can use K & H high gloss acrylic lacquer thinners. It will give you a very nice finish with reasonable gloss. I always use this when doing high gloss blackouts much less cutting back on awkward spots and polishes up a treat.

Cheers Dave

Thanks Dave.
I'm testing most of these different ways.
Getting a much better spray off the gun now. Here's some of the things I've learnt to achieve this.
1. Make sure breather hole on pot lid is not blocked. I used to ignore this when cleaning. It is important!
2. Get the pot filter in the correct way so more paint can flow to nozzle.
3. Reduce air pressure at regulator so the air volume valve on gun can be opened wider.
4. Use a 1.8 tip

e3asejy6.jpg

Tested out some clear on the panel behind bumper. Looks and feels very sexy.

I'm reading that last post thinking, I can relate to that. Learning the paint game on the go.
Looking good though. Have you had any trouble with over spray? Do you plan to paint all parts and assemble without painting again?
I'm not sure if if will give my car another layer of paint with the guards on etc.

Good on ya Marty. Looks like you've got some gloss happening now.

Did you try the flow coat (2 wet coats) for the final coat?

Six top coats in total should be enough if you don't chop back every 3rd coat. Too much film thickness can lead to problems in the future.

I'm not sure if if will give my car another layer of paint with the guards on etc.

I'm painting all parts then fitting doors and giving the hinges another spray, the pins will damage when fitting.

I had problems with overspray leaving a dust on the large flat areas when I had too dry a mix, had to wipe them before spraying. Hoping that is fixed now.

Thanks John, always good to get your encouragement every couple of weeks.

Yes Dave I did give the double wet coat a go, It was all looking so much better and not exactly sure if any one item helped but feel I'm on the right track now. Thanks for your help.

Very tempted to clear the car, I like to get as much info in my brain (not a lot of room there) and try these things and make my own mind up.  Each way achieves a different look and I like the clear.

Marty

^^^ Chopping back and buffing those fiddly areas is a lot of work. Easier and quicker to apply clear to achieve the desired result.
