After that first run we ran it again with the revs up to run the cam, sounding great and smoke all gone, then the water started coming out the overflow radiator pipe.  Shut it down, also found an oil leak at the rear of rocker cover. Pulled that off, looked like even oil flow over rockers, cleaned gasket and head and sealed gasket and tightened tight this time.

Next start up, radiator cap on and running to check temperature, temp kept rising and thermostat didn't want to open so we shut it down again. No oil leaks.

Removed thermostat says 180 tested it, opened under boiling water from kettle, think I'll get one that opens earlier and try that.

Fantastic day, the engine was cranked over for about 30 seconds with no plugs until the oil pressure started rising.  Then plugs in but no lead to coil and crank it with pressures, still sounded good. Then apply the spark and what you see in video, she fired straight away.

Cheers

Marty

Marty,

with the temp i have a similar problem. i tried all the thermostats x 3 - ended up with a triden high flow.- but this was not the problem.- there was no problem at all in the end It was as below.

took the gauge out and got tested with the sender - there was an error with the sender Vs gauge and to adjust the gauge needed to put in a 10 ohms resistor - didn't do it yet.

check the water temp with a multi gauge if you have one and run with the radiator cap off and you can see flow.

well done man - I'm stoked for ya

I had a big grin on my head watching that vid. They don't refer to the engine as the heart of a car for no reason - it doesn't feel like a real car til the engine runs. Well done, happy for you.

Hi Marty
Just reading about your thermostat. I put a 180 in mine but i tested it first by putting it in warm water then allow the water to heat up and she started opening at 80c and fully opened at 85c. I was told you cant dump these things into boiling water straight up
With my laptop hooked up and driving around the engine temp didnt get above 86c
The origanal one i had opened at 92c so the thermos would come on at 95c and general driving would put the motor at 94c. Pain in the ass really coz when you stop at the lights the fans would come on

this was a good day, got home smelling like a torana owner who has been out in the shed...

my LJ is slowly moving on, engine rebuilt...  rust repairs just started.. then paint then trim...

it may not be a show pony...  but it will run like a thoroughbred...

ps will need a *complete* heater assembly for LJ...  anyone know of a good alternative or a complete set that can be rebuilt...

Thanks all.
It was a very exciting time and Craig's description of a clapping seal is spot on! There was a lot more of that on the extended video.
Fitted a 170 degree thermostat and ran engine, this time the guage read one line above normal. So I think your right Grant, it might need caliberating to sender.
Gave the engine a few blips of the throttle and was pleasantly surprised at how responsive it was.

Ok. Trying to upload pics but says I have to upgrade Tapatalk.
See ya.

Upgrade complete.
Steering wheel and dash in.

Tip for the uneducated - keep your old steering wheel when upgrading to a new one. You'll need the copper horn ring and indicator cancel piece.

When fitting fuel sender I noticed my wire had the wrong connector, luckily I had the correct one spare, so joined it under metal plate.

just off topic a little Martin, but just curious as to what screws are used to bolt in the fuel tank and what sealer if any was used around it? by the way it all looks great, love the interior. Greg

Hi Greg, not sure if screws are correct, think I got them with a spare tank. They're Phillips with a washer. The sealant I used is black windscreen sealer.

Getting the under felt in is interesting. Asked upholsterer for advice and he gave me these measurements.

They defiantly helped.

Made a parcel shelf out of Masonite then covered with a thin hood lining textured.

Fitted a seat to check where the felt must stop. Also needed to see what holes to use. Wanted to use the big boys holes but my legs not long enough, so swapped to little boys holes.
