Thanks Daves,
I knew I'd seen them somewhere but when they came in a firewall kit, it threw me.

This week saw the floor pan fitted, all butt welded and ground to give the factory look when finished.

I had this area where it didn't quite fit so I cut a slit, bent into position and welded.

Not much change from a distance but slowly things are happening.

Painted a few bits on the week-end, all primed and 2K satin black, pretty happy with finish.

Sorting out the bits for zincing, some will be gold and most silver. I'm using these photos to help me work out what they're for when I get them back in a box all mixed up.

Anyone know where I can get this profile rubber, I've tried Clark Rubber so far with no luck. Goes inside the front guards near the headlights.

Hey Marty,
I just read through this from start to finish and I must say I'm impressed - awesome work! I'll be watching this with interest.
As you said, you get more confident as you go along and skills develop - keep it up.
Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff, great to have you onboard. Yes, confidence is high and looking forward to the challenges ahead.
Sent some parts off for zincing and got them back this morning. This lot cost $50 and took 3 days, much cheaper than chroming so I'm getting all the bits & bobs done, just putting together the next batch at the moment.
That bonnet clasp thingy was quite rusty so I chucked it in molassis for a week and it came up a treat, the rust pitting still shows but thats hidden under the nose cone. If rust is in a visible area I would sand it smooth before plating if you want a top looking job.
Before

They have been plated the same colours they were on this car, presuming they are original, some gold and the rest silver.
After

IMG_2937.jpg 58.09K 37 downloads
IMG_2938.jpg 59.98K 38 downloads
Spun the car and did some more paint removal on the passenger rear, this side had few small bog repairs that i'd like to dolly out later.
IMG_2933.jpg 42.14K 39 downloads
Now the weather is cooling, the surface rust has appeared so I'm on a mission to get the etch on in the next few weeks. Concentrating on sandblasting all the edges of panels, engine bay and even the underneath, once sandblasted it gets rustblasted then on a warm afternoon I'll epotec it.

looks great marty and you bits come up really good to, just some advice when sending off your bits to zinc coatters make a list of what you are given them and then make sure thay do a check off because there will come a time when they will loose the most importen things
cheers gong

As John said with the zinc parts, man it's hard to keep track of bits once they are back as well.
lay out and take photo with masking tape and write on the masking tape what they are for then you have a record that you can read out of the bag.
last tip for cleaning bolts and things prior to zinc
have two containers 1) marine clean that's the ppc stuff 2) some form of good quality rust converter ( bunnings has a really good brand ) in 1 ltr clear bottles.
wire brush stuff first , then move the bolts and nuts and screw into the marine clean for a day wash and then rinse and then into the rust converter for 4 -5 hours and then rinse.
when you get then zinc and if they use a tumbler they will come up a really well.
sometime at the platers they cannot be arsed to clean them that well.
keep going bro

That's what Shaun said when I bought it, was good to get the XU-1 parts with it. Sandman sounds like a great alternative to the Torana.
I've been really happy with the condition of this car, has had front guard repair but looks like a good job.
Thanks to Dave, Gong, Potta, Taps and Grant for the encouragement.
Feel like I was locked away for 3 days blasting the car, what a mess and glad it's over.

Well, my 'last post' which thankfully isn't, was written about an hour before going under the knife to fix a hernia. I had visions of not waking up and leaving you guys with-out an update.
So progress has been slow after a holiday in Bali, then the op, and then getting addicted to 'Breaking Bad' a tv series that I have watched 4 series in a week, not good for the Torana resto.
While in Bali I saw this HQ, gave the guy the thumbs-up as I took some pics.

Thanks to Blair and Potta for their thoughts, You're right Blair, an inch longer.
Here's a tip for those who didn't know - I've used walnut shell in my sand blaster to clean-up all my aluminium, plastic and electrical conectors. It will remove dirt, paint but is gentle on the metals and plastic.

IMG_3081.jpg 23.48K 36 downloads
After giving the shell a full 'RustBlast' I decided to KBS the floor pan and then used 'Fusion' to leave the surface ready for the Red oxide primer.

Cleaned up the rocker cover, ready for dent removal and priming.

Made up the section for the shock tower and welded into position.

I'm welding up the aerial hole, notice the other aerial hole that was welded up by someone, could of drilled in the wrong spot and had to fix-up. Forgot pic of mine welded, but it looks better than the other one.

This panel had taken a hit near the headlight and was pulled out and bogged by previous repairer. I was going to cut a new section in but have been advised it would be better to repair this. So I used bolts through the holes, put a washer and nut at the back then my puller to get the dent out to closer fit. I did heat the metal first to make this easier. Then I welded up the holes using this piece of copper pipe, flattend then I could poke it in behind and use as a heat sink. Tested the fit to the headlight bezel, much better and only needs a skim of bog were'as before there was about 5mm.

One of the bonnet mounting points had both ends cut off (not sure why). I made up some new ends and fitted them.

That's all for now but should make some serious progress next week with me taking time off work to recover from the op.

I love that show.
Anyway, good to see you back, I was getting worried.
When I bought my blaster from Radum I spoke about blasting the plastic grill and discussed what medium to use. Never heard of Ricks Resto's?
All I know is when I tried garnett on my lower dash (aluminium) I could see it wearing the metal away so quickly stopped that. When I put the walnut in it took the easily removed paints off but not much more. Cleans up tarnished ali and great for switches and bakerlite with metal contacts. Obviously I presume the switches will still work. :-) Not sure how soda or glass bead would go on plastics etc?
Thanks Gong, I've done enough resting, nows the time to get stuck into finishing some of these rust repairs. Wow...don't like the sounds of not waking up after the op, but I spose it does happen.
I decided to leave the shell Bare metal until the weather warms and I have an Air dryer for the compressor. So I'll continue with the welding then give the whole car a Rust Blast then Etch prime.
