Man that is an awesome job on yout Torana! I reckon the way you are going there will be no rust left in that thing for a long long time.

Have you done any training for this? Like are you a pannel beater?

This is a sort of step by step photos on how i did the rounded part of the sill.
Firstly i made some verticle cuts, but short horizontal cuts at the bottom of the verticle cuts so the cuts are L shaped. (2 L cuts)
The dotted lines are fold lines the solid lines are cut lines. :spoton:

https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f312/toranacar/P4141387.jpg[/img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage

Just the top part of the sill marked out to cut

https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f312/toranacar/P4141388.jpg[/img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage

Cuts made alond the L's and bent/curved over, but what happens is when you bend/curve over this section over laps and so when youre happy with the shape of the curve you cut it and you end up with this, a triangulated/pointed cut/section.

Just comparing the original and new, looking at shape and size.
https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f312/toranacar/P4141385.jpg[/img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage

Making the shoulder, mark out where the shoulder is by comparing with original, using a steel or this case aluminium block clamp it up.

https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f312/toranacar/P4141391.jpg[/img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage

this is a smaller peice of square stell so i could tuck it in the corner as the other block was too big

https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f312/toranacar/P4141392.jpg[/img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage

With the block clamped up behind it i can tap a shoulder into it this way, just many small taps, dont bash it.

https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f312/toranacar/P4141390.jpg[/img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage://https://cache.gmh-torana.com.au/i50.photobucket.com/albums/f...img]]My Webpage

Next step is to beat the L cut sections untill they meet together with minimum gaps between them so they can be welded like this.

Hey Bart, thats a great job, I really admire people who can fabricate bits like that! I reckon the more of it you can do yourself, the more you'll appreciate the final product too...

Hey thanks Oldn64, and everybody else for there compliments, havnt seen you around for a while mate.
The box im looking at using is a Supra box, (W58 i think), i forgot to include in the photo the bell housing, so yeah i got the bell housing with with the VH41, its an auto bell housing im hoping to modify it if possible to make it fit on a W58 manual tranny.
Unfortunatly these motors never used a manual tranny.
I should also add i wont be doing the conversion for quite a while
Kind regards :spoton:

Unbelievable work there Bart.

I really admire someone who has the balls to cut a car up that way and get it looking so good!

I can't wait to see the VH41 in there.

Yeah its a big bitch ay. If you look at one close up you realise its infact the twin cam heads which make it BIG, the block is actually quite short and the V is a little wide making it even bigger. :spoton:

This is basically the finished item without painting it, i should have posted it before iv been slack, its the same sill panel as above while i was making it.
A bit of surface rust there which ill brush off later. The inner sill is painted with weld thru primer and painted with some old automotive paint i found,

Some pics of the sill panel fitted/tack welded to see how it all lines up to the door, this is where the chassis jig came in handy as i can take measurements to get the right height/placement of the sill.
The first pic shows the door in its original position is slightly too high so the door had to go down 9mm:cry:  and the sill up 10mm   :fool:

This is the part that Jap-Xu1 thought was a mouse when it was sitting on the jig, i asure you it is not, its actually the part which reinforces the sill panel.
The top one is what i made from left over sill panel, under it is the original item.

Thanks guys, I hope it helps people when they decide to restore their cars, its actually allot of trial and error im just showing you guys the bits that have worked out lol.
But yeah one thing i have definitly learnt is dont weld it until you are 100% sure its ok, just tack weld it then stand back and see what its like, sometimes it takes an hour or so of looking until you notice anything is not right, the sill is one example, its actually still not right even though it looks ok in the pics its a little inward too far by about 3mm, which means i have to beat it out more by hitting out the inner sill or the join of the inner and outer sill, then have another look and take more measurements, it dosnt have to be to the mm but pretty close, and the door gaps to sill panel etc must look right or it will drive me bonkers if i weld it up and paint it and notice something not right, ill tear out the hair on my bald enough head lol.

P.S. theres plenty of holden left i assure you lol.

The sill is mostly welded on, just a couple more welds here and left to go, then a good clean up of all the welds etc

I was a bit dissapointed with the way the welder was performing,, i just couldnt get it right the way i like it, and so the weld didnt flow very constant, the steel was clean as a whistle and i fiddled with the welder feed rate, gas, and current and still couldnt get it perfect then later i got it to flow well but by then the welding was already messy, oh well, i checked for penitration on the reverse side of the panel and it was very good so this confirmed a solid weld, at the end of the day i was fairly happy with it.
