I often hear of people performing searches or tracking down of the history of there cars prior owners. How does one go about doing this in QLD?

I had asked the DOT at time of registration and they advised my car was last rego'd in Cairns in 2000. Thats all they could say......

How do I obtain more history??? Previous owners etc.....?

In nsw you can go on line with the cars info and pay for a timeline of a vehicles time spend registered by the "operator" and specifies periods such as time spend in a car yard (like when they don't have to pay rego here when the car is on the lot) but it does not identify owners or ever the number plate/s it may have had.
The car could have had several owners but if they did not transfer the car it won't show.

Bit of a waist of money for the info given IMO.

I got on to the transport department, can't remember at the moment which department but it was to do with the freedom of information, it cost me about $30 and they did a search but they had to ask the previous owners if it was ok for me to contact them before she gave me the information.

She only had records for the information that I already knew so I don't know who first bought the car, just know it came from Brisbane and apparently was bought by a policeman.

Just got this back:

I refer to your email below.

You may submit a Right to Information Application with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (the Department), however please note that information such as previous owners of a motor vehicle would not normally be provided by this Department. Under the Right to Information Act, members of the public have a right to request access to information held by the Department however when that information relates to the personal information of another individual, access to that information would be refused to protect that individual's privacy.

However, in situations where an applicant is seeking access to the history of a vehicle, which they currently own, including previous owners details, consultation with previous registered operators of the vehicle (third party) may occur and their details provided to the applicant, only if the third party agrees to their details being released. Alternatively, you (as the applicant) may agree to your contact details being passed onto any third party.

Further information relating to the process for accessing information held by the Department can be found at the following link:

http://www.tmr.qld.g...nformation.aspx

Please note that this office is unable to process manual credit card payment of the application fee of $41.50. As such, if you wish to complete the application form which is contained within the above link, you will need to provide payment of the application fee by cheque/money order or presenting at your closest customer service centre.

I am happy to discuss the above further with you over the telephone and can be contacted on 07 3066 0709.

I have no idea of the previous number plates. But when I re-registered the car, the lady told me that chassis number has last been rego'd in 2000.... Thats all she could say.

Good luck with the search cobber, I reckon the original owners would be spun out to see the car again given it's such a rare combo and in better than new condition..

Right To Information Act people gave me a phone call. Apparently their records only go back to 1991, they show a previous owner from 1993 up until 2000, and that is the last time it was registered, here in Cairns. I think now, they are going to post a letter to that persons last know address advising them I want to get in touch. My details will be included along with a current photo of the car.

I have a feeling the owner prior to this person was most likely responsible for the MAROON powdercoating of every thing on this car.... bumpers, door handles, k-frame, diff, window mouldings, bonnet hinges etc....

Im keen to meet them so I can ask them........ "why"......?

That is a possibility!!!! The car was sold new from Toowoomba, and has probably been a QLD car all it's life.

RIGHTEO!!!!

The RTI got back in touch with me. They had sent 2 letters out to the last know addresses of the last owner of the car. One was marked "return to sender" the other who knows...... My personal details were included in the letter along with a pic of the car in the hope the previous owner would make contact with me directly or through the RTI......

So that seems to be a dead end.....

But they have forwarded on to me the entire rego records of the car that they have in there database. There records dont go back any further then what is supplied....

So keeping in mind the car was sent to Toowoomba City Motors December 1975, the car was rego'd in Woodridge a suburb of Logan in 1988, with the number plates 252-AEX?

Then rego'd in Mermaid Waters, Gold Coast in 1989 still with the 252-AEX number plates.

Then from there its rego'd at Holloways Beach which is a Suburb of Cairns in 1993, this time a change to 718-CEV number plates.

The last known rego details of the car is in Cairns 2000 until I came along and rego'd it in 2013 and now it wears SLR-008 number plates!!!!!!

Id sooooo love to know when or where the powdercoating and entire strip down and rebuild of this car was last done.... Keep in mind the entire K-frame, suspension, diff, tailshaft were all powder coated maroon, the engine has been re-built using REPCO pistons, the entire interior changed to black/maroon. Every piece of shiny trim was also powdercoated maroon.....!!!!!!!

I doubt any shops were capable of doing that up this way around that period.... I could be wrong, my gut feeling thinks that it was done whent the car lived on the Gold Coast???????

So I wrote a letter into the Aussie Muscle Car Magazine (Muscle Assist colum) hoping some one may know some history of the car. The letter was published in this months issue.

Well I had a phone call from a guy in Toowoomba who knew a guy that said he once bought a Black LH SLR 5000 back in 1976, he passed on his phone number to me, I called him up and Ive just spent the last hour chatting to him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The original owner of the car!!!!

So what Ive found out.....

The car was a special order from a member of a family in Toowoomba that had some heavy clout within the town back in those days.

When the car arrived at Toowoomba City Autos December 1975, the guy who ordered it didnt like the look of it as it was not how he imagined it would be.... He managed to cancel the sale and the car sat at the Dealership into 1976.

Thats when Graham comes into the picture, he spotted it and purchased it for $6,200 incl on road costs in 1976, he cant remember what month of 1976, but took it back home to Millmerran.

The salesman at the time told Graham this was a one off and no other LH SL/R 5000's came out in Tuxedo Black. He just assumed the salesman told him that to make him feel all warm and fuzzy about buying it. He can recall the number plates started in OJQ-???.

He does however remember that he found himself in the middle of several arguments with people accusing him of re-painting the car Black.

Graham didnt change much on the car, he said the motor spun a big end and needed rebuilding, but was just the bottom end that was rebuilt, so that dosnt explain the REPCO pistons I found fitted. He fitted the Lynx Weiand inlet manifold and Holley carb which were still fitted to it when I got it!!!! He damaged a spider gear in the 2.78 LSD but had that repaired. Extractors were fitted and a new exhaust system, which he said the extractor flange used to scrape the road a lot as the roads around Toowoomba back there were pretty ordinary.

The car came fitted with mesh headlight protectors from Holden and also a stainless bonnet spear down the centre of the bonnet which was removed when he fitted an A9X style bonnet scoop.

Graham owned the car until he traded it on a VC Brock Commodore at Eagers Holden Dealership in Toowoomba in 1982 as Toowoomba City Autos had shut down by then. After that, he never saw or heard from it again, but knew it didnt live locally.... (my info shows it rego'd in Logan in 1988)

He still knows the Holden salesmen that sold it to him, he is retired now obviously, but he will ask him if he can recall anything about the car. Its a long shot but he said he will ask around!

All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!

Interesting talking to a fella commenting on a pic of my car on FB, he can recall seeing a Tuxedo Black/Chamois Trim SL/R 5000 on the Gold Coast in the late 80's early 90s. This car spent time at Mermaid Waters during that period, so most likely same car.
