You could slide some heat shielding around the line perhaps...that would kill 2 birds with one stone, protect the paint, and also help insulate the fuel line depending on how close it passes to the header...

(I did it to both my fuel lines, where they come up beside the exhaust)

Cheers Barny!

Does anyone have a mounting bracket for a GTS mirror they'd sell me? I have the complete mirror but am missing the little bracket which screws onto the door. Must be to suit the GTS style mirrors as they are different.

Nice build mate, just read the whole thing start to end so far, great job. Should go as good as it looks, just hope you get traction....

Cheers, Nig.

Here is the CAE starter. You can see the pinion and the clearance to the flexplate.

Once it gets hot the flexplate rubs very lightly on the starter pinion and gives a horrible high pitch noise.

I've got a shim kit coming to shim the starter and this is supposed to move it a few thou away from the flexplate - fingers crossed it sorts it out...

What reg are you going to put on this? Or, are you still registered?

Dunno.

Probably full reg to start with.

Everyone reckons I should club rego it to start with but I think I'd rather full reg so I can drive the pants off it   :driving:

What are you thinking?

Join the "blokes who get full rego & think they'll get there car on the road sooner rather than later & continue to pay full rego like an idiot for years & years" club.

I think I've paid 3-4yrs full rego & it hasn't seen sunlight in just as long :(

Cheers, Nig.

When I spoke to a club they suggested ful reg. you need an engineers report regardless. If you give the report to a club, that's as far as it goes. If you give it to Vic Roads they put it in their system and it's there for good. This way if you decide to go full reg after a while on club reg, you don't need another engineers report. That said, I'm hoping for full Vic reg. see how we go. With bubs around now trying to get five minutes in the shed it next to impossible. Finishing mine could now take a while.

Good thinking, and it makes sense.

I think you'll still finish before me.  Life does get in the way sometimes. No rush....

Hey mate any chance of a pic of the sump clearance with the rack installed? My engineer is still being difficult.

Is the noise only when the starter is engaged or is it when the engine is running and the starter is disengaged?

Hi Andy,

Noise is when the engine is running and starter is disengaged. Not a nice noise, doesn't always happen but definitely sounds like flexplate rubbing starting pinion.

Hi Dan,

Here you go...heaps of clearance for the sump to rack.  If you're running the same gear as me it should be the same?

Hi Daz,

I found that happened to mine once after a rebuild and new motor. What fixed it was acouple of washers between the block and the starter motor. That 2-3mm downwards made all the difference.

Sounds like you want a shim between the starter motor body and the CAE mounting block so the pinion retracts an extra mm. Putting a shim between the engine block and the starter block will increase the gear lash when the starter is engaged which you probably don't want.

Looking good Daz, love the colour. What time frame are you hoping to have the car finished by Christmas?

Hi Andy, great info. The shim kit actually comes with the shims to shim it there as well as the shims to go between the block.  My issue is working space.  In the gap between the block, headers, and bellhousing, I'll need to be able to get the mounting block off and shimmed.  It's going to be fiddly.

Hi Wayne, actually mate, I would like to have it finished in time for the November Great Ocean Road cruise....will have to see how that goes as things always take longer than planned and I'm miles off.  I think it'll happen faster once the mechanicals are completely sorted.  It's going in for an exhaust soon and I gave the trimmer a rocket about the interior a week back. See how that goes.  :thebird:  :wtf:  :repost:

Been away so nothing has been done but got back into it today.

This is the shim kit for the starter...

You can see the installed here which will sit between the starter body and the mount as mentioned by Andy to move the pinion 1mm further away from the flywheel.

Attached File  IMG_2091.JPG   149.1K   4 downloads

This is it all installed back up.  It's now quiet, no intermittent screeching and the lash must be good as it's very quiet when cranking too.

Attached File  IMG_2095.JPG   103.76K   5 downloads

Really happy that job is out the way.

Once I got it back together, I installed the radiator overflow bottle and started it up.  Got it up to temp and the overflow worked as it should, fans came on, engine remained in temp range so all great there.

I then put my intake jigsaw together and installed it up.  Really happy with how that came out.

I really do need to install the fan blower :o

:) :)

Thanks.

Nah, the new ocean road cruise day is Oct 6 (I think) and that's not going to happen.

I'm hoping November it will be done.  A few big hurdles to jump yet :)

Yeah mate, you'll prob need to fit a decent snorkel if you plan on driving it, while your at it you'd wana fit some goggles to it as well because salt water starts stinging your eyes at anything more than 20kms/h !!!

Cheers, Nig.
