Not sure if this is in the right place.....
Anyway I just put a 253 in my uc and its running a quadrajet. The carb it came with had the choke set up removed (engine came from WA but its now in tas) so it was impossible to get running so I could tune it.

I bought another quaddie off a 350 to get re jetted (I thought it had all the choke gear.....)

Tbh I have no idea how to set up a choke on it.
The choke flap is sprung closed always. Is this right? I've seen electric set ups and the manifold heated spring set up and the fuel miser manual kits but they all have a big round bit that bolts on the side and mine doesn't.

Anyway here's some photos of what I have hopefully someone can help :/

350 quaddie

Quad that came on the 253
(ran fine when I bought the engine. But that was in summer..... Now it won't idle)

I don't really care why choke I end up using as long as I can drive the bloody thing!

Can I make one out of the 2 or should I send off the one from the 350 and get it re jetted and rebuilt and a choke put on it.

Any help would be great!

My auto choke uses all these bits. The rod is disconnected from the carb linkages in this pic.

Do you have them?

I had great success with Hume Performance. Was about $500 I think?

Does that bolt to the manifold? My manifold has a bolt in a hole in roughly the same position.
I'm running extractors though. Doesn't those pipes bolt to the exhaust manifold? I might have to try run a chev electric choke set up... Or just go Holley. What a pain

Maybe just pick up a core one with an electric choke and swap the bits over?

Along these lines sorta perhaps..

Yes that assy bolts to the inlet manifold and is connected via a vac pot into the manifold. The heat pipes go from it, to the exhaust manifold, then back up to the air filter.

That's a pain in the butt. I like your idea LS1 might have to grab a electric choke set up. Ill track down humes and see what they can do for me :)

Sell them both and buy a blue motor 253 carby, and put an electric operator on it.

The 7043284 is from a 1974 HQ or LH Torana 308 auto, also suits 1974 HJ 308 auto but by the date code it is HQ or LH. It'll sell for $50-$100 on Ebay.

The other carby is I think from a 1977 Chev truck.

Here is what you want: 17059596 CXL:

Here is another, but you'd have to check it has the right numbers:

Yes, that is it. Operated by a switch on the dash, basically replaces the thermal operator.

Get onto a volumn carby rebuilder like Humer Performance in Sydney. They may sell you a blue 253 one (with the numbers I gave you) exchange for the 308 one you have, or may buy the 350 carb too to save on the blue one.

This is the other blue quad on eBay 7045244W7
I'm guessing its still the wrong one.

I'm going to put my other 2 on eBay and hopefully get a bit of $ to go towards the right one :)

Not even close! You want 17059596 CXL.

17059595 CXK is the 308 version, and there isn't much difference, only maybe the primary needles and a few other minor things. However you are best off starting with the right carb. Hume Performance may be able to turn a 308 one into a 253 for one for you? Worth asking if you can't find a 253 example, although I have seen plenty go through Ebay. Just have to wait and keep watching and ask for the numbers if not given.

Edit, just saw this at Fastlane. The second carb may well be a blue 253 carby:

I have 2 rochesters for sale. Both have been fully recoed. acid dipped, throttle shafts rebushed, new throttle discs. numbers are 7043284
first one is Hq type. suit auto trans.

Second one is a blue motor rochester. VC / VH commodore
$250.00 each which is less than std. rebuild price. bargain.
I live in Adelaide & please contact me at [email protected]
Cheers

They still do, I had hoped to exchange my 74 date coded quady for a 75 date coded item of the same P/N, but they had none available for exchange.
