Okay, thanks for the info everyone.
The reason for returning the fuel to the surge tank and not the main tank is that if the 044 pumps MORE fuel than the Holley black, the surge tank will eventually run dry.
The lift pump is always returned to the main tank, and the main pump always returns to the surge tank. As for the lift pump working harder, the lift pump will always be free flowed back to the main tank, so is not working into a pressure head, it is unloaded, will run quieter, and will have a longer life expectancy.
The filter to protect the Injectors from debris and rubbish should be 10 micron, and the 100 or 80 micron before the lift pump if possible, or at least before the surge tank, as mentioned earlier.
The Cater Gold works great as a lift pump, and will lift fuel easily, but they can be a little noisy, but compared to a Holley pump are like a church mouse, I'd like to find a Carter Gold shaped and sized pump that is a gerotor style pump, LOTS quieter.
The holley black flows around 530 lph, the 044, probably around 300 lph I believe, but I do see the reasoning behind it and will plumb it into the surge tank rather than the main tank.
Im fairly certain the engine builder specifically didnt want a filter before the lift pump, but I will pass on your info and see what he says back.
Will look into the carter gold, thanks.
