Blabbing on a bit here but the "trick" was if you had to rebuild your 3 speed "crash" (dare I say it?) back in those days, was bronze bushes in the cluster (discard the needles as bushes took more load) and grind the leading edge of the first/reverse sliding gear (which was mashed already anyway) to a sharper pitch to make 2nd to 1st double de-clutch down changes more user friendly. Rebush the side plate and fit a speco floor shift and you had the "bees knees" of the era. Ah yes, those were the days, farting like a draught horse and grabbing another VB from the fridge. :spoton:

.....  Even with syncros today the double shuffle should be used when needing a fast down shift whilst maintaining engine revs to ensure effective engine control at all times to the driving wheels......

With syncro gearboxes you can achieve the same thing with just heal-toe, no need to double declutch. Torrie gearboxes are fantastic, can downchange all the way to first gear, no problems. Try that with even the newer Jap gearboxes!

I think it is better to do it do minimise braking from the engine rather than effective engine control, which gives better overall vehicle control, including back on the gas if required in emergency situations. Go pedal for going, stop pedal for stopping.

Usually just the much older cars (Vintage & Veteran) with crash boxes and the double de-clutch required. I also believe that Formula Fords still run crash boxes, dunno why though, maybe just the old romantics that drive em.

I guess the term crash box means different things to people from different era's.

Technically it means a box with no synchro's but if you walked into a wreckers, a parts store or even a Holden dealer in the 1970s or 80s and asked for a clutch plate to suit a Holden 3 speed crash box, they wouldn't have argued that it wasn't a true crash box, they would have known exactly what you were talking about.

Am I showing my age here?

From where i see it, at least the following cars had So called "crash boxs" in them and as far as i can remember all early Holden 3 speeds and Ford 3 speeds had them.
All manual Holden's EK, FB, EJ and the cars in between had grey motors and matching 3 speed crash box (No syncro in 1st).
EH, HD, HR, possiblily some HK's had the red crash box (No syncro in 1st).

Ford XK, XL, XM, XP etc had 3 speed crash boxs (No syncro in 1st).

As to changing gears back to 1st, all you need to do is learn is how to rev the engine to let the gears match in, it can be done, try and drive any manual with a broken clutch cable or no fluid in a hydraulic system, it happens and you need to get home!
Same thing 3,4,5,6 speed all syncro gear boxs.
Start the car in 1st, its the only time the clutch is normally, really needed.
After that you rev it in, up and down. No clutch at all! if you have to stop, before you get too slow shift to Neutral, stop the engine, back to 1st, crank it over, off you go, done it heaps of times

May also be my age, but only ever heard of these gearboxs refered to as crash boxs.
