Now I know people are going to have all sorts of opinions and im keen to hear em all.

Car is a 70/71 lc gtr,
- missing tag with paint code etc (has others)
- unknown original colour
- significant front accident damage (repair able)
-no original engine (at this stage)
No interior or door trims etc

Good bits
-original rust free country car
-not heavily.vested financially so far

So, looking at the hard facts, the accident damage and the missing tag, its never going to be worth the same as something else completely restored etc.

Not knowing the original colour, its tempting to just have a free reign in that area.

The modification side is more in regards to drive line, interior, and overall direction of the resto/mod process.

I'm REALLY keen to go 1j/2jzgte into an lc/lj and this is the next car in line around our joint, so its an obvious contender.

Overall aim with this car will be to build, keep for a short while and then Sell on to fund a buying another project.

So what do we all think? Original with a twist (red 6, severs 5 speed etc) full original, or modified?

(Typed on the.phone on the train, sorry for anything dodgy)

Have you seen if Bazza has any history one the car , I think being an LC GTR , standard is the way to go , otherwise it could be looked at as a modifier two door , by anyone looking to buy a GTR.. The LC GTR , has stayed in the most buyable price range , and been less affected by the current slump , than other models .

Would not chop it up too much but see if theres any original paint under fusebox or pacel shelf, paint it up original however put in any removable mods, such as motor gearbox seats diff ect then should the tag or original engine show up it could always be put back to standard.

At the end of the day thou if you wanna do what you want, do it. The nitpickers ALWAYS  whinge and carry on if it has the corect motor, carby radiator wheel nuts and god knows what else, just have fun :)

Gotta love those 2Js,especially with a stickshift, but if you plan to sell it on

I think it may cost you more to build it modified and achieve a lower sale price when you decide to flip it.

So,financially speaking, put it back to original if you are selling it.

If you want to burn some cash and have some crazy nutso fun, turbo 2J and a stick.

My opinion, given that above all else it is a GTR and you have the original motor, my opinion is to restore it and maybe even sell it later, and put the 1J into a non GTR car.

Just my 0.02c

cheers

Another factor if  you are going to sell it standard , the buyer can put it on $60 a year Club rego .  As for having fun , I  have fun in my standard LC GTR , I even enjoyed my standard UC .

I think if it can definitely be substantiated as a GTR, then go original.  If there is too much doubt, go the modified path. I love the LC GTR's.  My favorite of the little fellows.

Dont have the original motor (you never know when it might pop up though)

TBM, I honestly haven't really looked much into the car at all.

we've owned it for the better part of 6 years now, after straightening the front on the rack, its been at the back of where we store our parts, covered in shadecloth and a shitload of insulation (waiting to go into my shed and my dads shed)

Its been a "when we get to it" kind of project.

This is when we first bought it, (blue car on the bottom)

Pic_0420_145.jpg

(funny enough the bottom car on the left is our now track torry, the purple flared thing, looks pretty bloody differnt now!)

Didnt think I had a front pic, but I found one from that same day taking phone camera photos

30-08-08_1339.jpg

The front pulled out reasonably square, the rail didnt actually cop as much damage as we first though, the rest of the shell stayed relatively intact and square too.

Pic_0826_206.jpg

We have basically everything to put it back together now. The inner guard is going to be the tricky part (given that we are using a donor section)

The body number, from memory, is more than good enough to be salvageable, and obviously lots of photos will form part of the process showing how the car was repaired, what parts have been used and replaced etc etc etc.

Atleast that way theres no confusion in later years with people claiming the PSF has been tampered with (well... no shit sherlock)

Keep body and trim original, LC GTR's look horn as they are.

Any mods to motor or drive line will only cost you more to do, but can make the car a lot more fun.

Make the mods reversible and what have you got to lose?

enjoy  :D

Sounds similar to my situation except I had big tag with exterior/interior color details. However no Vin tag. Although my car was a freshly painted rolling shell when purchased in its original color, Mediteranean Blue. So whilst it will never be a 100% original LC GTR with no original driveline and Vin tag l think, in my opinion for what that is worth, it is still more valuable having been restored to it original roots. I also dream that one day l will find the Vin tag and driveline but then l wake up and realise the chances of that are basically zero. In saying that, in today's market whilst l would get more money with Vin/driveline l don't believe it would be much more than what l could sell it for today as it currently stands. I dream in its current form it is worth $35k to $40k (Happy for other to tell me otherwise) and think maybe $45k if it had vin/driveline. So l think the value is still mostly in the fact that its restored to its roots and the work is of a high quality. I might also be biased and think the LC GTR is the best looking LC/LJ Torana of them all!! Suppose it all comes down to what someone else is willing to pay.

Cheers Macka

Agreed, it's not like it's an immaculate original car that you're "ruining" by modifying it. You definitely won't make your money back but it would be 100x more fun while you have it!

No point wasting money on an orignal resto in my opinion. Just repair it, make it pretty and put whatever you like in it.

If you're going to flog it off, you'll make more money by keeping it original(ish).

The GTR's have unique bits that aren't tags to prove identity, but you can't prove paint/trim etc.

I'd keep it red six powered, with nice original type paint and interior, and flog it off. Buy a non-GTR to put a 2J in (not for fear of modifying a 'genuine' car, but it'll be cheaper...)

If you were planning on keeping it... 2J, tubs and go nuts with the paint/interior :)

I'll put a 1J/2J in my LJ one day...

At the end of the day even a #@$^%& 2 door S shell is commanding what i think is a ludicrous price now days, hence my comment on just do as you wish with it.

At the end of the day whats a restored ish missing tags etc GTR worth now days? Unsure on color etc, i would think about 20?

I recon a reasonably well sorted 2j powered 2 door would be worth the same kinda money....

Better than spending 10 or so and tonnes of hours to get what you have back up to standard then starting again on a rusted out #@$^%& shell that you had to fork 5 out for IMO

Cheers.
