I have had many a discussion on whether the LX /UC torana 2 door is a hatchback. On web etc.. it says it comes under the requirements. Howvever I have also been told that it is a coupe only and that the dealers stated that it was a hatchback. Are they one and the same. Ive always called them hatchback, say coupe and sounds g...a...y.  More thoughts please as.

To me it's a hatch. A coupe has a boot.

As above. A HQ Coupe has 2 doors and a boot lid. A LX hatchback has 2 doors and a hatch no boot lid.

Of course it had to be hatchback. One guy had a good go at me for being wrong. The old fists of fury had to calm down.

Hi

The ADR tag says "Coupe" and the GMH publicity brochures say "Hatchback" - I guess that means that it's both :)

Cheers

coupe is a 2 door, a hatchback is a 3 door.

So, if I buy an LC or LJ 4 dr and convert one side to 2 dr configuration so it has 3 doors than I'll have a LC/LJ hatchback. :stirpot:

GM-H technical bulletins refer to it as a hatchback coupe.

If the rear windscreen moves with or is part of the rear hatch/door/boot - then it is a hatchback, doesn't matter how many doors it has.

It's a hardtop.

I think your argument goes back to the old days when the RTA had only two options for cars - coupe or sedan.

If it had 2 doors (or should I say, less than 4 doors) it was considered a coupe and they would charge you more $ for rego.

Panel vans and station wagons also paid more for rego I believe.

These days the RMS only has hardtop and convertible and charge the same amount for rego whether it has 2, 3, 4 or 5 doors, so according to the RMS, it's now a hardtop.

I also remember we used to pronounce it koopay.

From Wiki:

The precise definition varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and over time. While the majority of coupes are two-door vehicles, several four-door vehicles (including the Mercedes-Benz CLSand Rover P5 Coupé) have been referred to as "coupes" by their manufacturers.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) distinguishes a coupé from a sedan (saloon) primarily by interior volume; SAE standard J1100 defines a coupé as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 cubic feet (930 L) of rear interior volume. A car with a greater interior volume is technically a two-door sedan, not a coupé, even if it has only two doors.

The International Standard ISO 3833-1977 defines a coupé as having a closed body, usually with limited rear volume, a fixed roof of which a portion may be openable, at least two seats in at least one row, two side doors and possibly a rear opening, and at least two side windows.

Alternatively, a coupé is often distinguished from a two-door sedan by the lack of a B pillar to support the roof. Sedans have an A pillar forward at the windscreen, a B pillar aft of the door, and a C pillar defining the aftermost roof support at the rear window. Thus with all side-windows down, a coupé would appear windowless from the A to the C pillars. These fixed-roof models are described as a hardtop or pillarless coupé. Though, to confuse things even further, there are many hardtop/pillarless two- and four-door sedans.

coupe part meaning 2 doors, you can get a hatchback 4 door sedan - astra... this is why they call it a hatchback coupe - not hard to work out

It's a hatch, have never heard anyone say that's a nice LX coupe. They are easily the toughest hatch ever made. I can only think of 1 other V8 hatch and that is the force 7.

Compliance plate says Coupe, not hatchback, therefore technically it's a Coupe, then again, so is a ute....

Precisely, what we know as a ute (utility) is actually a coupé utility.
