Just had a look at the cat to make sure it hasn't melted and started to block up....  there's nothing in there! I have heard of people bashing them out (generally vn v6 criteria), but this is clean as a whistle.

Should I    a) replace with a standard cat

                 B) replace with a high flow cat

                 c) leave it as is

                 d) replace with straight pipe, or weld straight pipe inside of cat

I've never touched a cat in my life so I have no idea.

Motor is a standard injected 5L with cam, has extractors to 2.5 or 3 inch cat back.

Any advice would be great

Thanks

Dan

If you're the slightest bit concerned about the authorities picking you for an emissions test on the car then I'd suggest a new cat is in order, std or high flow, however I suspect a std cat will do for your mild engine.

Cheers

Dave.

In my old VN V8 I had an ignition module issue for a while and occassionally the engine would cut out and then backfire on restart, that cleared out the cat converter.!

Standard Holden cat does the job as well as the so called high flow ones. Did some dyno tests with a few when I had my VR.

just leave it as is. This way if you do ever get epa tested you have grounds to show you havnt modified it in any way and were none the wiser (plead ignorance)

if you do put a straight pipe through it, and the epa checks your system, you will get a hefty fine.

I would fit a functional cat converter in the vehicle if it supposed to have one.

Dont know the laws in your state but here in NSW the fines is extremely high.

I was talking to my local exhaust bloke earlier this year and told me the story of his old boss.

The EPA rocked up to the exhaust shop and suspected him of removing a converter from a customers car which had been on sold to someone else, (the old owner of the car pointed the finger to the exhaust shop)

the owner denied ever doing it and told them to get out of the shop.

The EPA inspectors came back later with an order to close the shop (while they investigated) and took welding rods, silicone, gaskets etc for testing.

In the end a fine of excess of $40,000 was handed out....

Dont know how true the story is, but was assured it happened.

I'm pretty sure the fined for an individual are like $11k if you get coughs driving without a cat, & if you work for a exhaust shop it's like $40k in fines.

I got sent a EPA letter in my old VR senator, it was loud, heads shaved, big cam, extractors & mandrel bent 3" exhaust etc... I never got pulled over once but someone "dobbed" me in so I needed to get it tested.
The bloke at the shop just put a std exhaust temporarily in with no cat & said he'l drive it like a granny, get it tested & come straight back & put it all back in.
When he got there they tested it & it past by like 1-2db but the bloke has asked him whether it had single or duel cats from factory & the exhaust bloke shit himself because he only but in a straight bit to join it up. They wanted to look underneath the car but it was slammed so low they couldn't see so they let him leave!!!!!
