Stud pattern choices.

Like ill be spending the extra money and going for the hoppers
My question is what stud pattern would I get? Thinking hq because of the choice of wheels but I realy want to
Run convo pro's. also if I go hq for the front I will have Torana rear as I will have the standard banjo untill that goes bang then
I will be upgrading to a r31 diff. Will I be able to get the r31 diff hq pattern?

Yep, HQ (5 on 4 3/4) will give you the widest range of wheels to run....from convo's to weld's, billet stuff, GTS wheels even, etc, etc.

Ford pattern will give you the biggest choice of rims and will also mean you can buy new discs for your hoppers kit off the shelf. The Hoppers 290 mm Torana kit uses a Ford disc, Hoppers buy blank discs in bulk and drill to suit.
The mail problem with changing the stud pattern on the R31 diff is that some states/engineers will not allow you to redrill the R31 discs. If this is the case then you are stuck trying find someone that sells blank discs or making a disc to suit.
Typically you have to buy a pallet of discs from a manufacturer of you want blanks.

Aside from choice of discs, how does ford pattern give you more wheel choices than Chevy out of curiosity ?
Unless you planned to run 12 slotters on the car or something... (and your Torana should be taken away if you considered such a thing, ha ha)

The offsets on some of Australian later model Fords are suitable for the Torana.
Ford pattern is also used by other manufacturers and uses a 1/2" stud as standard.
The Ford pattern will give you the biggest wheel option
As they are the same as Mopar,Nissan,Toyota,Late Subaru and plenty of other things too

I chose Ford as well, most Jap cars use the 114.3x5 stud pattern.

A see a few people have gone with the ford pattern.. What happens with the rear? What diff/ brake setups are you running?

Exactly Bomber
Ford pattern on the front and use Falcon axles in the BW75 for the back
Thats what I am doing with one of my BW diffs in a datto and just having the axles shortened and resplined

THats right there a 75 arnt they...
The axles are interchangeable so long as there the right spline though arnt they?
Ford is prolly easyer in that regard, as you cant use HQ rims on Commy axles....

Hi Nick,
Good to see your project is coming along. Am I missing something here, is there something wrong with the UPC kits? I too will be converting my brakes and stud pattern soon going to HQ pattern as I want weld draglites for my car.. I think they really suit unflared Torana's. I am interested to know how I can go about changing my 9inch axles to HQ pattern also?

I never would have suspected that it would have made a difference in going with ford pattern...since aftermarket wheels all come in both anyways (I hadn't really been thinking of fitting stock wheels off of anything that is) can understand if you wanted to go that route though now.

UPC kits don't really fit (at least thier 330 mm kits sure don't fit, can't speak from experiance on thier smaller ones.
New 9" axles are cheap enough as an option, aside from drilling the old ones with another set of holes (if that's legal there?)
I have another set of draglites there again by the way too, lol..

Wanted to go for a 290 kit as I heard any bigger than that might require bigger than 15in rims and I am happy with 15's. Just got my car back yesterday and with the engine, gearbox and engine bay done, next will be to get some rims and brakes upgraded, not a necessity at this stage though. Brakes I guess will have to be done first so can work out the correct backspace for the rims.
Read some threads tonight on UPC problems and quite frankly I do not want to deal with idiots who dont believe in customer service. I have had enough drama's with painters, mechanics and engine builders recently to last a lifetime. I have become that disillusioned with this build that I will never take one on again. I just want to finish this car, enjoy it and move on.
Maybe if you can do me a good deal I might be interested mate

They are on ebay now, lol...
And not sure on what sized front kit you can run and still fit a 15" rim, but sure it's been gone over a heap of times here. Good call on getting the brakes sorted out at first too, then measure for perfect wheel sizing/backspace/etc.

It's getting there.. Still can't see the light at the end but Yea.
I was the same as you upc brakes where reasonably cheap so I was going to buy them but
After I read all the reviews I think for the extra money ill get the hoppers.
Unfortunately I am still confused on a stud pattern, ford seems to be easiest with the rear diff just to buy
Au axles and everything would be off the shelf for brakes...
I want the convo pros so I don't see a problem with getting them in ford pattern..
Can anyone comment on pros and cons ford vs hq pattern.or if there is a thread floating around point me In the right direction.

I was looking at convo pro's for my car because they actually come in torana pattern. For me though I think convo pro's look better on a flared torana rather than unflared, thats why I have gone with the weld draglites.

You can buy brand new billet axles for around $500 a pair these days, 28 or 31 spline, so for that price you wouldn't even bother getting a second hand pair re-drilled, it's just not worth it IMO.
