So I tried to pay for a re-exam and apparently I have no failed exam's in the system.

Mr Steeringistooheavy told me I could go for another re-exam even though I questioned him because the original month would be up.

Its bad enough that they make it so difficult but they also don't know their own rules ffs.

If anyone can recommend me someone who understands old cars and can do inspections, please PM me.

I have Friday off of work and would like to take it somewhere it will pass, legitimately of course, I don't want to be driving around in a death trap but there's like 5 things left that are all perfect now.

Worst case I'll have to take it back there but it isn't my first choice cause its going to cost me the same as taking it somewhere else.

I had the same probs with heavy steering and not centering in my UC. All new front end. Asked my mechanic and he said drive it over some bumpy stuff to loosen her up. So I went speed bump and curb hunting and that sorted the centering issue, new ball joints are stiff. I went to a private inspector and had no probs with heavy steer. He said it drove and turned well for a non pwr steer car
I also got to know this guy well in the 12 months leading up to the imspection, just asked him questions and to provide input to the project. He loved the car

There was some other better ones with old cars but they were being a bit shadey and got canned last year

Yeah I'm gonna put the skinnies on too which should help.

Jerry can of petrol to top her up - check

jack her up to put skinnies on.

Oh no, the jacks leaking, but why does it smell like petrol

Further inspection at 9:30 at night leads me to a leak from the sender on the front of my tank.

FARK.

Can't find my siphon, can't find anything to seal it with, so wrapped it up in rags as best I could and changed the wheels over to skinnies.

Off to Supercr@p first thing to get something to seal it.

Found some fuel resistant gasket sealer stuff, sealed it up and no more fuel oozing out.

chucked some fuel proof silicone on top and no more leak.

Test drive to see if it self centre's and it does a lot more than before, but now there is a bit of a pull to the left.

Oh well, she'll be right, maybe.

Ready to go to inspection centre, wtf is that smell?

Petrol, that's right, driving it around made it leak again, so I had to ring up and cancel my inspection, which means I forfeit the inspection fee.

Then off to Ozzy park to pick up the only sender unit available in the state until at least mid April.

It was only there cause someone never picked it up, must be my lucky day lol.

I may have only needed the seals but its not the kind of job I want to do twice.

Slightly tempting to drop a match in the boot and be done with it.

Oh, and I bought a new siphon pump thing.

So that means 16 litres of petrol cost me about $240, plus the missus made me go to Ikea which cost me another $130.

Definitely my lucky day.

Teething problems are par for the course unfortunately, but I'm not sure which are worse, not being able to get it registered or not being able to drive it once it is!

Hang in there mate, it'll all be worth it real soon.

With the pulling to the left problem, it might be worth swapping the tyres left-to-right to see if the problem follows a particular tyre or whether it's just how the wheel alignment was set up for your bigger wheels?

Well that sucks!
I don't get it? the leak out of the sender? Is it an XU-1 tank? Otherwise the sender is on the top and shouldn't leak unless really full.
If it did leak fuel should stay in boot.

All HB/LC/LJ/TA Toranas have a fuel smell in the cab when your driving them.

Its because of the rubber hose in the boot from the fuel filler, the rubber hose that runs to the breather, the rubber hose that runs through the boot then back out for the fuel feed line and the sender being mounted in the boot with a cork gasket leaching fumes.

Because its factory its acceptable, generally any part of the fuel system in the boot is illegal for this exact reason, but were special......I doubt mr thimble arms would have known that either though.....

And yeah there prone to frOcking leaking into the boot to.

Cheers.

Bugger.

Should have gone for the inspection, pointed out you just noticed a fuel leak and that you expect to have to come back for re-inspection once that's been sorted.  At least you wouldn't have wasted the inspection fee and you find out if the other things have been fixed.

Yeah thanks Bigfella, I was thinking the same with swapping the front wheels, can't hurt to try.

Yeah it has a Bathurst tank Marty, maybe its an XU1 in disguise lol.

It was running out of the sender, into the lip of the tank , then overflowing into the depression where the pipe goes out, and also running down the outside of the pipe and finding its way through the rubber grommet which seems to be original fitment and doesn't seal like it used to which is allowing petrol to drip out.

Yeah I know I had smelt a bit of a petrol smell before and didn't worry about it for that reason, although I did think it was a bit stronger than my other cars, I couldn't see any leaks so didn't worry.

I wasn't worried about failing because of that, although if it dripped in the bay that wouldn't have been a good look, it was more that I didn't feel safe driving it that way, and didn't have time to fix it.

By the time I get rego I will have rebuilt the whole car if things keep going how they are lol.

My fuel tank vent, use to snap off all the time, so yes, smelling fuel in the cab,

but back then, I never thought about fixing that outlet connection properly.  :furious:

Yeah I suppose I could have but it was oozing enough for it to be pooling in the boot and I didn't feel comfortable driving it like that.

If I had thought of it earlier I would have just bought a siphon and emptied the tank a bit and problem solvered, but that thought only just crossed my mind.

I have siphoned about 18 litres out and the leak has miraculously fixed itself lol.

Yeah they are not the best design, especially on the big tanks.

Used to never fill the tank in an LC or LJ unless you had to in the day.

Half full was plenty.

Otherwise the fuel leaked out the filler cap on acceleration.

Could never get it to seal properly

Replace fuel sender unit - Done

It did need replacing because it was cracked around the outlet pipe and had been repaired previously.

Not 100% happy with the Rares part but it will do the job.

It's fine, just not the same as original, which is a shame.

I haven't tested it yet, that can wait, I don't wanna know right now but it shouldn't leak now anyway.

Bit of advice if you are doing this job with fuel in the tank, put your breathing apparatus on before you start, I have a wicked petrol sniffers headache now even though I had my mask on for most of the time.

I don't know how they do it.

Got my tax return so will be getting this on the road soon.

I think I took this after putting in the taller springs and giving her a wash.

I like it

Not sure yet mate, got a couple of things to sort out first and then try again.

My preferred mechanic isn't interested in doing it unfortunately.

A mechanic that isn't interested in doing a Torana mustn't  be a good mechanic at  all haha

All the best with it, hopefully you will be on the road soon to enjoy that very nice piece of work you have done,
