Heath, i'm all for personalising your car but WTF is with the race seat and harness, it's turned a nice car into a ............ dare i say it "a ricer", personally i think it spoils the whole look of the car, even though it's a UC it's not a bad looking UC.

What was wrong with the other seat.

Geezus I think the general consensus is people don't like that seat Heath.

I have to agree mate, not a fan, but you're the one who has to sit in it so up to you I guess.

I think the red seats look cool as.

I think the seat is fine! It is only a few bolts to put the standard one back in and he obviously plans on doing some spirited driving and taking advantage of the suspension work he is doing. The other seat would have you sliding all over the place as soon as you hit a corner.

I'm tipping the seat is all about function over form, and aimed at what the OP is intending on using his car for. Looks tough, I reckon anyway, even if it doesn't conform.

Thanks Re the diff, its a VL std length by the look of it, comes in 25 or 28 spline. have you counted the splines yet?

Not so easy to get 28 spline axles, but if it,s 25 spline, probably heaps strong enough?

Fixed backs are totally ricer spec :P

You can have just as much support with a reclining bucket seat :P

And where have you got the harness bolted to?

Turned up a solid bearing spacer for the pinion bearings:

2013-09-17233023.jpg

Measured up what it had already. Tight setup on the gearset, but the open centre was worn out and was giving it a fair bit of backlash.

2013-09-20205031.jpg

Made up a tool for getting the pinion nut on and off during setup:

Made a tool for installing new carrier bearings:

2013-09-21191610.jpg

Ended up getting a bit of a hand from a diff shop around the corner from the factory - G&J Diffs in Dandenong. I went there to swap some shims and discussed a problem where the gearset seemed to be binding, ended up actually having a slight fouling problem on the TrueTrac centre with the factory pinion which turned out to be a BW75 gearset. I happened to get an "old stock" centre and after a bit of machining from the pinion head, it was all good. They also gave me a hand with the final setup too.

Also got my hands on an 18mm rear bar. The mounting points don't line up perfectly so I will need to change the setup a little later, but I put it on.

Nice work.

How do you find the helical gear type diff compares with a clutch type LSD? Trying to decide whether to invest in a TrueTrac... only shortcomings I can see are loss of torque if you happen to pop a rear wheel up in the air, which shouldn't be happening in a street car.

On paper seems to be a good compromise between a stock BW LSD centre and a KAAZ centre - both of which I'm also considering for my BW78 conversion

I find the TrueTrac very good. I've been in plenty of clutch-type LSD cars including quite a number of the OEM BW ones. I've been in one KAAZ car and actually thought it was a bit much (I'm normally pretty damn forgiving towards that kind of thing).

I haven't done a lot of k's because I ran low on oil pressure with this motor recently and it's out ATM, but for the time I have driven it, I've been very impressed. Seems to be the best option for a street car at least, you could argue that a KAAZ is more suitable for track work on paper at least.

Well the motor developed a surprisingly bad leak a few weeks ago, got low on oil without me realising and through a few corners ran outta oil pressure.

Crank needed grinding so thought it was just as worthwhile to get my spare Black 202 crank and blade the ends of the counterweights, I'll get some better photos of that when it is back from balancing.

I can't fit a Black flywheel into my bellhousing with the rat-trap clutch arrangement, and don't want to get too involved in changing that stuff around so I'm sticking with the Red flywheel which is not ideal, but I at least put it in the 4-jaw and took a bit of material off the engine-side. Would have prefered to put it on a rotating table and take proper mass off the clutch-side but didn't have access to the necessary equipment.

Why don't you just change it to a full cable clutch?

So why doesn't the blue/black flywheel fit? Dimensions are the same as a red, except less material in the back similar to what you have machined out.

Blue/Black is a nicer flywheel, but I believe the clutch to suit (which I don't particularly want to spend money on when my red clutch is perfect) is a bigger unit that doesn't clear on the rat-trap arrangement. The reason I don't change to full-cable is that it's just more parts to buy and more money to spend on a setup that will not be in the car for all that long. I know the existing combination worked well

Not much love in this thread, hah!

Why Why Why?  :stirpot:

Your skills are impressive Heath. I can barely change spark plugs let alone machine fly wheels etc..

This car is cool Heath, and it's very interesting what you've done.

I'm looking forward to seeing it out and about over summer hopefully.

What are the plans for the car? If the engine is going to be replaced, what do you have up your sleave?
