Maybe something in it Heath, the machining grooves could possibly be contributing to oil being screwed out. I found the following reference in relation to older MG crankshafts: "Perhaps the most annoying source of oil leaks in older British sports car engines is the mechanical oil slinger/seal arrangement designed as the primary rear crankshaft seal.  The theory of this Archimedes-principle seal, is that the spiral grooves at the back of the crank fit with only a slight clearance to the stationary upper and lower oil control surfaces.  As the crankshaft rotates, the action of the reverse oil control threads against the flat sealing surfaces draws the excess oil back into the hollow cavity next to the rear bearing where the oil drains harmlessly back to the oil pan."   The difference in your case is that the seal is spinning and the grooves are stationary. Nevertheless interesting to see if the smoothing operation provides a solution.

And is the same reason that old MG's with proper wire wheels had left and right hand thread retainers. They didn't leak oil, but had other issues...

Early "Aussie" boxes, 3 and 4 speed, had a reverse slinger input shaft seal rather than the positive neoprene seal.

There is also  the speedie sleeve option if what you've done doesn't fix it? https://www.ebay.com...phoCUloQAvD_BwE

Or, the Ol' remove the spring from the seal, cut 5mm off it and refit it tighten up trick?

And amazing news... Street Machine's September issue will cover the full car feature! :D

So... will it COVER the September issue as well?

Either way, I can't wait to see the photos and read the story!

I guess "Cover" is the operative word here. Haha!

Certainly a childhood dream for me.

Well I found another error of mine! When I made my exhaust, I just welded some stainless bar to two convenient locations on the floor of the car and didn't laminate or brace where they were attached.

Anyway, here we are with 9,000km down and one has cracked through the floor after thrashing the car on some bumpy B roads last weekend.

dqe3uES.jpg

Ripped the rear seat out and started peeling back the insulation to find the damage from the inside.

dJpazSU.jpg

It has only broken the floor on the LHS where it is more "flat" and I guess it's bent the floor up and down a few times until it has work hardened and started to crack through.

Funnily enough, I had already bought some material for a second pair of exhaust mounts as I noticed the rubbers weren't fairing too well, just hadn't made too much time to execute it yet.

So what I've done is jacked the mount back up to its old position, re-welded it together, and added two gussets on the inside of the car to make those small sections of the floor nice and strong.

Added more insulation:

And started work on some (hollow this time) extra exhaust mounts on the rear mufflers:

Plus I horizontal-cut the tailpipes because I found they were a bit too close the ground on those rough B roads when I had the smaller rolling diameter Hotwires on the back anyway. Probably looks neater also.

In slightly more significant news than exhaust mounts, as Shiney kindly eluded to, my car made it onto the poster in the September issue of Street Machine.

Well, it made it onto the poster, it is the topic of an 8-page feature, and it's the cover car. Holy. Shit.

aycMhcB.jpg

That could not have gone any better. Had the legendary wordsmith Simon Major (Simo from the Thongslappers podcast) to write the feature, and Tappy's outside and in-studio (studio being my warehouse at work) pics came together so nicely. I reckon the cover shot is bloody mental. The graphics team had a lot of fun with the bold pallette of the car and working with that theme all through the pages of the feature as well. And I'm of course thrilled that they chose my car to represent this classic modified car institution and its shelf presence in-front of punters for a whole month.

Saw some engineering stuff that suggested 5 points.

You are pushing some limits.

But apparently 5 points works well.

Cheers

Well done Heath. I bought the first edition of Van Wheels, and used to buy Street Machine into the late 80's but stopped when the cars got less and less street cars and more and more open cheque book trailer princesses. Yours is certainly not that! Congrats.
