Hi guys just an update and i wanted to say thanks for the input. I wasn't 100% what the issue was so the changes I made where a holley 465 cfm carb, I sent the bosch electronic dizzy to performance ignitions and had it reco, I also changed the valve springs with a new set, then I took it last week to a different mechanic he spent 2.5 hours on the dyno where it achieved a good rwkw figure but even better the car now is totally street drivable, the mechanic did suggest the need of a spacer under the carb but I don't want to cut a hole in the bonnet. Took a bit but a happy outcome.

thanks Peter

Sounds good Peter. I have a 1inch spacer under my holley 650 on my 308. Have no hole cut into the bonnet and it just clears with a 50mm air filter spacer under the 3inch high air filter. I have the same inlet manifold as you so if you want to go the spacer option it can be done without modifying the bonnet.

Air cleaner base plays a big part in clearance. There are several different heights on the carby base (base to air cleaner).

I'm glad you got it sorted ! I would recommend going the spacer as well. The difference is certainly noticeable. As for your tuning woes, i think the art of tuning old school is slowly becoming lost. I remember back in the late 80's throwing my v8 torrie up on the rollers and all the tune shop had was the old Vane machine. Boy did they know how to make a sweet tune. They even managed to perfectly tune a 650 double pumper to my cammed 253. waaaay to big but ran sweet through the whole rev range !
