I wouldn't say they have no real meaning. The codes identified parts and assemblies that the production sheet called for to build a particular model variant or production option, rather like part numbers used to identify spare parts.
Dr Terry may know more and be able to explain it better than me.
Cheers
Dave.

Basically as you say Dave. The Broadcast sheets had either these codes or the last digits of part numbers or other such things like BLK or PNK meaning black or pink for things like jheadlining colour or speedo cable gear, or RUB for rubber floor mat etc. You will see these 2 x letter codes painted onto engines, gearboxes etc or on tape attached to harnesses or stickers on radiators or starter motors.

thanks guys...I guess I didn't say what I meant....i.e." no real meaning" didn't mean they meant nothing,( now theres' a sentence ! )
I understand that they were codes, I guess I was hoping the initials sort of referenced the part in some plain English way
a make believe example would be "LF - means a water bottle for fitment to the left hand front side"...but then again, with
things like "XU1" being used, I guess they were just random sets of letters that could be reference internally to mean something, but as a collection of letters/numbers they had no real world connection. pweh

What was the sticker placed onto the passenger side frontal section of the rocker cover on L31 Torana's?
I have seen HR and HP on LH SLRs with the L32, and HS on LH SLR 5000s. The HR sticker also featured on the wiper motor I believe.
I think I may have seen SJ in black paint (Rubber stamp?) in the same place but not sure which car. Maybe A9X?

OK Col I see where you're coming from now. Most likely just random letter codes assigned to the parts.
However some codes may be more random than others.
Let's look at the LC/LJ horns for example. The high and low note horns were made by R.V.B engineering and Holden assigned to them the production codes RC & RD..
Could these codes mean:-
RC: R = R.V.B & C = the musical note C?
RD: R = R.V.B & D = the musical note D?
Has anyone ever tested a set of horns to find out what notes they actually produce???
Cheers
Dave.
