Hi,

 

Have asked in a round about way before, but still looking for a definitive answer,.....

 

........my Opel ( wonderful things I am told ) isn't totally wonderful going into second, other gears  OK.

Still very driveable, but not 100%.

 

OK from a 2nd gear standing start, not so good on the up or down shifts.

Assume that means a synchro issue/wear?

 

Want to keep it original,,,,not interested in a Aussie/Supra changeout.

 

Are Opels rebuildable still?.........hard to do?............. parts available?

 

I've looked on the web...but cant find bugger all....except maybe a seal kit or two?.

 

Anyone know of a parts place/ overhaul shop for these antiques?

That is super typical for any gearbox that has a lot of k's under its belt driven 'normally'.

 

Just double it into second? Then the car can stay original and it doesn't cost anything.

 

To actually fix the Opel gearbox? I'm not sure whether you could get parts. I'm no gearbox expert but I believe you can typically change synchros from low-wearing gears (such as 4th) onto high wearing gears (2nd!) which may be useful if you can source a spare box. 

 

But yeah, driving style will overcome that.

You could also try using a different oil before you pull the box apart. I not sure what oil was originally used but it may have 80w90 oil which may be to thick for the synchro rings to work properly, some like a 75w90 with a GL5 rating may help it, it would be worth a try as well as changing slower.

Ta Warren...I Did change the oil just for the sake of knowing it was new, put in Castrol VMX 80 75w/80 as per book.

 

Might try that lighter idea.

 

Re changing slower...shes just a cruiser, so no snap shifting happening...ha..ha.

Quinn motors in Adelaide does a lot of Opel gearbox work. Last time I was there, he had a couple on the bench he was rebuilding. 08 8258 8798

thanks for keepin a look out for me Craig.

 

I always try and be gentle on the old cars, I'm starting to think maybe I am too gentle......went on a club run for appx 120km the other day...deliberately was a bit more 'snappy' on the shifter ( still not aggressive) and never missed a shift.

 

Thanks again....still might keep an eye out, and just tuck one away for the future use.  Although maybe transport from west to east might be a killer.

I thrashed my first LC XU1 when I was a 17 year old in 1981, and the only drama I had was the clutch plate blowing apart; the gearbox never gave me grief. However, these days, I have managed to accumulate a couple of NOS 2nd and 3rd gears and some synchros just in case.....
