As Datto mentioned, they have FINALLY arrived, no thanks to the post office being extra slack more than normal.. (I had sent them way before T-fest in hopes they could have been dragged over there for every one chasing one. So looks like we'll just have to post them around now instead, hopefully that is not too big a drama at least. :)

Any one who is interested now in one just go ahead and shoot me a message and I will send along details to stick the money (its a Westpac account there so nice and easy) and I will then let Datto know who is paid up and we should be good to go then. Just need to work out the easiest way to get them posted around to everyone now is all..

Oh, and in case anyone missed it... they are $38 each and are genuine GM ones right from my local Chevy dealer. (plus then what ever postage will work out from WA to everyone..we just need to get that worked out the easiest way is all..)

Probably just grab the bottom of the steering wheel shaft and give it a side-ways wobble

Just got home (work away, mining industry) to find a little packet in the mail.

A big thanks to Jeff and Neil for their efforts.

Now the fun begins with trying to fit it.

Bit late now you can do this without killing the coffee pot swage.Leave the inner race behind and remove the outter race lower and upper. The bearing can be split and usally it only needs new ball bearings which can be bought from any good bearing outlet.1/8 ball  for 20cents a piece. So keeping it short load the lower with balls grease keeping the little buggers in place then feed coffee pot over then load balls in then top outer race and circlip spring and all good.Sorry it I Fuked up the size bth_DSC00041-1.jpgDSC00060.jpgDSC00066.jpgDSC00074.jpgDSC00081.jpg

Above or below the cloth joint??

Between the bottom of the steering wheel column and before the steel trunion/universal.

Steering-Knuckle.jpg

That is the steel trunion/universal so just grab it and move it sideways

You will soon find out if those little balls are worn as you will see & feel the sideways movement of the steering wheel shaft.

Time has come to replace the bottom bearing.

Has anyone tried to replace the bearing without removing the steering column?

With the car on a hoist and working from underneath....how easy would the job be ???

Steve

Installation wouldn't be too hard, its a matter of whether you need the column on the bench to make the parts (easy done if you have a spare).

I made mine to just screw on without modifying the column so its pretty easy to install and remove:

Steve

Are you installing a new original type bearing or planning a modification?

I have one of the bearings sent out from the States by Jeff ( LS1 Hatch ). Just wont to replace the original bearing with no modification.

Shouldn't be hard to do then. Theoretically speaking, remove the uni joint from the end of the steering shaft. You may need to undo the flexible coupling and completely remove the steering intermediate shaft.

Next undo the two screws and remove the strap from the lower end of the steering column jacket, then remove the large 'C' shaped clip and withdraw the bearing and the plastic adaptor from the steering column.

Press the old bearing from the adaptor, clean up the adaptor and press in the new bearing and put it all back into the column.

Thanks for the reply. That was the answer I was hoping for.

Should save a bit a time if the steering column does not have to be removed.

Has anyone removed the bearing this way ?

Steve
