was wondering if anyone knows an easy way to tell the bolt patterns apart,

and when they were made from.

im after a carby version.

In my opinion the quickest/easiest way to tell them apart is to look at the top bolt locations. If you look at the rear face of the block there are two bumps at the top corners that are designed to give extra meat around the top bolts, like a boss. The Holden pattern places the top bolt holes nicely centred within this boss area, the Chev pattern does not (the bolt holes are a little lower and it looks like the extra meat at the bumps/corners is pointless).

Everything VN on will be Turbo pattern .. then convert to carb

Statesman blocks are usually Turbo pattern and engine numbers can start with 11QT

I reckon the easiest way for a novice is to check the bellhousing dowel size.....

Tri pattern use a 1/2" dowel, turbo pattern use a 5/8" dowel. Grab a 1/3" or 13mm open end spanner and see if you can slide it over the dowel, if you can it is a Tri pattern, if not it is a turbo pattern !

HJ to about 11/81, so about 9/74 to 11/81, but only auto blocks and not HT or HZ prefix Torana blocks. The engine number prefixes you need to look at are:

QT, 11QT, ZT, 11ZT, VT, NT, WT, 11WT, 12WT, N5T, BS.

Some of these can be manual or auto.

Edit,

HJ to about 11/81, so about 9/74 to 11/81, but only auto blocks and not HT or HZ prefix Torana blocks. The engine number prefixes you need to look at are:

Edit, brain snap. Erase BS from the above and add BV. BS is a TH pattern low comp 253. BV is the same but a 308.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

you have made it a LOT easier.

was looking at a VL 308, wasnt sure about it, but easier to tell now.

when switching across from EFI to carby is it just the manifold to change on VN-VT?

VL is a trimatic pattern, and no good for you as it has all sorts of ULP implications etc.

You can't use a VN-VSIII engine with a carby and have legal rego unless you run straight LPG. But to run a carb on one of these just remove the EFI valley cover and put on a carby valley cover, there are a few like Harrop, Redline etc that fit the VN-VSIII heads. An early dizzy will go straight in. I wouldn't use a VN-VSIII 304ci engine with a carby in a 4x4 though, the ports in the heads are too big and the engines are too doughy down low. I stuck one of these is my HZ Holden Overlander, it was a standard VP engine with a manifold and carb, it badly lacked low end torque. Best bet is to find a whole blue motor in TH pattern. What year Patrol are you modding?

I'd just use a whole VN-VSIII engine. Get it Engineered etc. build yourself a 350 stroker later if not powerful enough. Or talk to Marks4WD about a Gen3 conversion.
