Should I throw the earth wire on it again for a second to make sure the gauge is still working?

By all means, but ensure the gauge is being monitored so the earth wire can be disconnected or turn the ignition off the moment the needle reaches the highest mark.

You'll find with the sender wire earthed the needle will rise quickly, so be ready to terminate the test.

It would be better and safer if you could get a 10 ohm resistor to connect in line.

I believe the VDO part number is 360-005 for the LH/LX oil pressure sender. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, that is the one I had bought for mine, and works perfectly.

get someone to help you and just touch it on or get about a 10 - 16 watt globe and put in series between the lead and the terminal

Tried the gauge again tonight with the help of the wife. Earthed a wire from the earth on the engine to the wire connector and luckily the oil pressure gauge still works. Thank god I didnt stuff that up. :D

Good news. A new oil sender should see it all back in action then.

New oil sender is on order, hope to receive it by the end of the week. Cheers you guys are legends :spoton:

Can't answer that one for you, LJ's have proper instruments with numbers on them. :stirpot:

LX's are far superior....all those numbers just distract you when you are going fast :P

Depends on the engine condition I suppose, oil you run, etc, etc.  I would say over all, somewhere between 1/4 and 3/4 perhaps. Obviously when it is hot and at idle it will be lower, and as you bring the revs up the pressure should climb some.

Brand new engine which has only got 800km on it so far, still running it in. Not sure what type of oil is in it but I think it is some special oil that is used for the initial running in of the engine.

Gotta take the car back to the mechanic at 1000kms so the oil can be changed and a few other things need to be done possibly something to do with the solid cam. Come to think of it we need to put a higher temp thermostat as the 160F one is too cold, modify the car to run 12V at the coil, might change the plugs too as well as a few other things that dont come to mind.

Earth the wire then have a look at the gauge. It should have moved to full pressure. If not the problem is elsewhere.

If you do this, do it for a very short time or you can stuff the gauge or voltage regulator.

Best to use a 10-70 Ohm resistor in series with the connection to earth and that will mean you can take your time waiting for the gauge needle to rise.

I wonder what other earths have been stuffed? Like the one onto your dash (back) mounted voltage regulator.

Your temperature and fuel level are also supplied from the voltage regulator. If they are OK, maybe check with a replacement sender. Your should be able to swap the oil and temperature wires at the senders (within the engine bay) to help with the fault finding.i.e gauge or sender being the cause. (of course you may need a couple of lengths of wire to do this)

Good Luck.

One week Eromanga, south west Qld (great place, wonderful people), next week Tirrawarra in the Cooper basin (search for Moomba Jeff).

The wild life around Eromanga is incredible, wallabies, kangaroos (including Big Reds), cattle, pigs, cats, emus, sheep, horses, goats, wedgetails, brolgas and every other bird of prey. There was wild life behind every bush, could not travel faster than 40-60 in most areas. There was road kill at the exit to town which was fresh every day for the resident pair of wedge tail eagle!

Found a shed in Moomba with around 20 barn owls (I think that was the type of owl, light brown with a white face). I have seen inland taipans, browns, king browns (mulga) and woma snakes often.

Makes the job interesting.

Sounds pretty cool ! I will have to do some google map work and get a vauge idea where some of those places are! :D  Lots of critters around it sure seems too !
