Wouldn't you be better of putting the VN diff under the Torana? Definitely stronger than a banjo.....IMO
Yeah Rob I agree however was also considering the harrop centre with 28 spline billet or strange axles. That way it's all new.

If you are getting new axles made then fitting the VN discs to the banjo would be no more difficult than fitting the VN discs on a VN diff.
The problem is that in the normal configuration the calipers on the VN discs hit the shocks on a Torana.
You can swap the backing plates left to right and mount the calipers in front of the axle which resolves the shock problem but you will have to modify the handbrake setup because the caliper is now in the way.
You can relocate the shock mount.
You can cut. rotate and weld the backing plates so the caliper in mounted the 10 o'clock position.
Another possibility that has been mentioned is ditching the VN handbrake setup and using Skyline calipers on the VN discs. I have not looked into this myself.

I would price up the cost of a banjo with a Harrop Trutrac and axles vs the cost of a Skyline diff with a Trutrac or preferably a KAZZ.

No clearance problem with standard length diff. You can also get your diff guy to weld the diff ends on with enough rotation to clear.
The diffs I had clearance problems with were standard Torana width. You need around 10 mm of clearance with new pads to allow for pad wear.
Which standard width diff have you found no clearance problems with?
Rotating the diff ends will make it difficult to connect the handbrake.

Harrop Trutrac is $1210, axles approx $600. Or just go the complete shortened VN V8 diff?

cost about the same to put the commie diff in there...Harrop Trutrac is $1210, axles approx $600. Or just go the complete shortened VN V8 diff?

For a lh/x torrie cheaper option would be skyline diff & gathering all partts up that you want. There should be a thread done by Rory that would be a good read.

Sounds like the banjo is the cheaper option once you add the cost of a Trutrac to the cost of converting a Skyline or Commodore diff.

Rotating the diff ends will make it difficult to connect the handbrake.
There is plenty of room on a 1445 mm BUF to BUF std length diff. The only hassle is having to make sure you fit the shock first as you can't get it on with the calipers already mounted.
The amount of rotation needed is slight, have a look and you can see. As the whole backing plate is rotated you can still use the handbrake cables and guides as intended. They work fine.

This is the clearance I had on a standard Torana width diff with new pads. The caliper would hit well before the pads have reached the minimum thickness. I doubt an engineer would sign off on this.
The amount of clearance would depend to some extent on the diameter of the shock body.
The only way to be sure would be to bolt the backing plates onto the banjo and check the clearance.

AFIK Plates are the same, but are in a different location.
