Ive seen a few different ones around the traps, not sure whats correct or not???
Spotted this just today.

I have seen GE on an original November 74 engine. Paint stencil rather than a decal

I'd go so far as to say I've only ever seen any decal on an A9X and no other v8 model

Pretty sure my red V8 VK had a little paint thing on the rocker cover but remember it being painted yellow

Was your VK was red or the engine red ? I, sure VK's where the first of the ' BLACK ' engines

Red motor in VK;Was your VK was red or the engine red ? I, sure VK's where the first of the ' BLACK ' engines

The Group A had red motors, but only painted red, they were 5.0, not the old 308, standard were black

Well if your getting all hung up on semantics and a red motor is really black but painted red then the red VK brock motor was a 4.9L, not a 5.0L or a 308...The Group A had red motors, but only painted red, they were 5.0, not the old 308, standard were black

Now you got me thinking. May have been the VB V8. Long time ago
Posted 28 February 2014 - 03:47 PM
Well, actually, if you want to get all hung up and technical. The 308 was reduced from 5044cc to 4987cc with the VK. Brock called them a 4.9l, Holden called them a 5.0l, but they are both the same block and have 5.0l on the side cast into them.

So what colour were they painted from the factory?Well, actually, if you want to get all hung up and technical. The 308 was reduced from 5044cc to 4987cc with the VK. Brock called them a 4.9l, Holden called them a 5.0l, but they are both the same block and have 5.0l on the side cast into them.

they weren't painted at the factory
sent to HDT as bare blocks
Sent back to Holden by HDT completed and installed on the line.

I bought a brand new manual VK 134 pack in 1986, it had the 4.9 litre engine that they called the black motor, the engine code was LV2, I am certain when I got it the rocker covers were black, I changed them after a while to chrome ones, likewise the air cleaner had a GMH 5.0 Litre sticker on it, even though it was a 4.9, I changed that for a chrome lid too, and put the Brock 4.9 litre sticker on it (dead cool)
Funny thing was , a mate of mine at the same time bought a manual VK Berlina which was called the 234 pack, his was also a 4.9 litre, but his engine code was V7X, there was only a month between the manufacture of these 2 cars as well, mine was 12/85, and his 11/85, never did know what the difference was, although mine did seem to go better than his
Any info on the diffrerence in these engines would be appreciated, I had that car for 10 years and sold it in 1996 for $11,000 it only had 103,000 km on it, I remember at the time I could have sold it 20 times over, the phone never stopped ringing, long before the internet, and carsales.com.au, just the trusty old Trading Post for those who remember it

Yeah not exactly sure on the colour.
It's not about the colour anyway, it's about the block. The first V8's were always refered to as the red, when they went to the VC they were called blue, and VK on they were called black, all because thats what they were painted from new, but they were all different too.

Not quite Mick, not all VK on are black 3.3 and 5.0L WB continued in parallel with VK until ealry 1985 and those motors remained blue.
As an aside, the first "Blue" V8's were actually Silver too, and were used in Bedfords.
Brad, LX will probably have a few different engine broadcast sheet codes, as there were 2 x diferent spec engines early on (pre ADR27A), one for A/C and one without A/C (different rocker covers) and once ADR27A came around there was probably 4 x different engines: manual and auto, and A/C and no-A/C so 4 x different codes. Check of original broadcast sheets will answer the question.

I have seen HR and HP on LH SLRs with the L32, and HS on LH SLR 5000s. The HR sticker also featured on the wiper motor I believe.
I think I may have seen SJ in black paint (Rubber stamp?) in the same place but not sure which car. Maybe A9X?

My VK had a 3.3 red motor. (Factory injected)

And this was closer to rocket red or Holden red, Red in the kill rust range looks closer to the HDT engines. My VK had a 3.3 red motor. (Factory injected)
