Oh wow where to start?

If its a stock 186 why did you change carbs?

If its modded whats done to it?

Was it a new or rebuilt carb or one that you or one of your mates or some random had on the shelf for the last 50 years that came off an old gem of a 161 that used to do a 6 second quarter back in 1852?

Does it actually backfire or just die?

First check is vac leaks. Next check is Timing. Could be accel pump but i cant think of why that would make it backfire, die in the ass yes.

Cheers.

Anything that causes a severe lean condition can cause a backfire - the mixture can burn so slowly that it's still burning when the intake opens, hence the cough. As Bomber said, vac. leaks, missing hoses, acc. pump no worky, blockages....
