Hi Team Torana

I have a fuel consumption issue - it appears that the tank leaks a little petrol. How do I know this: Well, the car in question, stored at my parents place for security, gives off fumes. I dare say it is wearing out its welcome with my parents due to petrol fumes through the house. "Open ya blardy windows cobber" - well thats fine for you good Aussie folk in temparate climates, but here in the country that god made it gets a bit cold for my old folks to have windows open to let the winter air in.

I quickly looked underneath and found traces of fresh fuel on the floor under the tank and fresh petrol residue at the base of the filler tube (where it meets the tank). Unfortunately the previous owner has applied some kind of sealant at this base so I have no idea how this join is actually constructed. I cant see how the filler tube is constructed/secured am suspect this is where the leak is - but who knows.

I would love it if anyone could share leaky tank experiences, shed light on the nature of tank/filler tube interface or general tank leaking knowledge. My mother would love the headaches to disappear! Please help before the car gets kicked out into the cold

If its the filler neck leaking, pretty sure they are soldered in.

A huge electric soldering iron would probably do the job.

Failing that you may need to get an oxy heated hand iron, but remember to keep the oxy set a good distance from where the job is being done

If its got sealant there it's a dodgy fix. The neck is soldered to the tank. Any good radiator place should be able to solder it up
