Hey guys,

Long time lurker of these forums and first time post-er sort of....

I have a few questions about particular LH/LX options such as A9X, SLR5000, L34s and SLRs because I'm confused over the exterior..

In my travels to search for inspiration with my car I've collected a few photos to get the 'look' I'm after, but I've found some A9Xs are like other A9Xs and other SLR5000s aren't like other SLR5000s.

here is some examples I have.

A9X

Attached File  LX A9X.jpg   106.27K   67 downloads

vs this A9X

Attached File  a9x.JPG   204K   56 downloads

Notice how there is SLR5000 on the side, was this a modification the owner did or something that was an option when new?

Attached File  1240465_323140571156176_16969106_n.jpg   72.28K   46 downloads

I think this is an A9X, but it has the SLR5000 sticker from LHs on the front guard?

Onto L34s / SLR5000s..

Attached File  2toranal34.jpg   24.37K   54 downloads
This appears to be an L34 - no scoop, the different black lines...
Attached File  1233563_322688387868061_1533611901_n.jpg   65.9K   60 downloads
so is this just an SLR5000 due to there being no black lines?

Also in a repair manual I have, it says the LH SLR5000 option stats the number plate area and along the door sills are painted black which is similar to the A9X without the SLR stencil. But also states the L34s do not have this.

So my question is. How come some of these look different compared to others in the same model/option and what did that model look like from factory if they AREN"T options?

If anyone had some photo examples they would be great!

Also, did all SLR5000s, A9X etc come with the seat insert (Golf ball/ herrinbone)? even if it had a trim code of 18v? (black slate)

Also thanks to this forum, it's been a wealth of knowledge and provided me with hours of reading!

Bit confusing isnt it jatz? being a bit of a traditonalist with my SL/R torana's it bugs me when i see people building a replica or a genuine car with a mix and match SL/R paint scheme..although my first LH SL/R 5000 was a genuine car that i bought painted up as an A9X.. Something else to note which isnt shown in the pics that RED posted are the rear bobtail paint schemes are different between the LH SL/R 5000 and the LX SL/R 5000 and A9X. The LH's had a blacked out rear bobtail with a small SL/R 5000 stencil on the right hand rear of the spoiler. The LX SL/R 5000 had a blacked out rear bobtail with SL/R 5000 in big lettering right across the rear and the A9X sedans had the same lettering as the LX except that it was in silver.

Also, 18v is slate grey with grey golfball inserts which was optioned in the LX SL/R 5000/SS Hatch/A9X Sedan @ Hatchback

P.s The L34 did not have a bonnet scoop, this was fitted on the A9X models only.

Pretty concise i think. Weren't the L34 flares narrower than the A9X?

Yes, the A9X had wider rear flares the fronts were the same though.

Only the rears, and some A9X's had them anyway

And the L34 doesn't have the black sills the LH SLR5000 has.

Thanks so much for your help guys!!!

Yeah I've read up on the flare differences and those sorts of things, but as you said AD_76 people seem to mix-match and it is confusing!

I've got a photo of the a rear stencil

Attached File  0620413900.jpg   63.15K   38 downloads

So this would be the style of a LX SLR5000?

Just on that, did LH SLR5000s have the rear section (tail light / number plate area) painted black?

I was going to ask a question about the chrome/painted bumpers but this thread answered it (just for future reference for others haha)

AD_76, got photos of your old car? I'd love to own an original L32 or A9X but for a young fella like me, finding one and having the financial side covered is abit out of reach! hahaha although I could get a SS in live in the back of that with the tent option just in time for summer!   :P

Yep thats how the LX SL/R 5000 rear end looked minus the flares of course, and yes the LH's did have the tail-light panel blacked out.

Spose i can throw up one pic of my first true love :D try to ignore the graphics up the side, this pic was taken on the first day i brought it home.

And to throw a further spanner in the works, LH Tuxedo Black SL/R 5000s don't have black outs at all. However I think LX Tuxedo Black SL/R 5000s have sliver stenciling for the decals?

I forgot to mention the red LX SLR5000 that I pictured has optional painted bumpers too. The original owner took up the kidney dish wheels and bumper option when he bought the car new. Normally they were chrome and the SS had the painted bumpers.

I think we should add some more photos to REDA9X's post & make it a permanent LH/LX SL/R-SS identification guide. With so many of these cars now molested it is difficult for the average guy to know what's real & what's not real, especially flares & scoops on the wrong cars.

One question for RED, you mention 'optional' painted bars on the LX. This was just a dealer thing wasn't it ? I don't know of any factory PO number for those. Is there? I know the alloys have a PO number.

. The LX SL/R 5000 had a blacked out rear bobtail with SL/R 5000 in big lettering right across the rear and the A9X sedans had the same lettering as the LX except that it was in silver.

That is not totally correct either.

The rear lettering was dependent on the body colour.

Jatz you couold do a lot worse than buy a copy of Torana Tough. Do a search here for purchase details.

Terry, the option was if you ordered the wheels you got the bumpers as well, I'm not sure what the reasoning was behind it.

The red car I pictured was bought by a guy in Gundagai new, his brother bought one as well in yellow. I wish I'd bought that car, it had 10000km on the clock. I saw the yellow one a few years later, the brother still had it.

They were pre ordered, not just bought off the dealership. I think I have the details from the logbook at home somewhere.  Since the SS had painted bumpers, one would assume they just fitted the SS bumpers at the factory.

As Welby says, not all A9X sedans had silver, but it wasn't dependant on colour either as there are a few cars in the same colour around but with black stenciling.

Many cars have been personalised over the years, you get that, but don't assume because it has an SLR5000 decal it must be an SLR5000. The green car wit the injected motor in the first post is a classic example. No SLR 5000 had that chrome trim around the windows.

Unless it was an LH SL/R 5000, and had the stainless trim running inside the window frame.

I always thought identifying a car was done through the tags not the paint scheme

You're right Kirk, but reason why I posted is to know the look of what they came from factory, as it's been mentioned alot of people have applied their own personal styling! :)

I'm quoting my self but the link has more information there.

I was going to ask a question about the chrome/painted bumpers but this thread answered it (just for future reference for others haha)

A9X - if the rear lettering is depending on the body, could you give an example of say a yellow a9x?
as for Torana Tough, I should of grabbed one at Torana Day in Adelaide but didn't bring that cash with me, next time though!

Dr Terry, I think that is an awesome idea and thanks for pinning the post! it would be a great help for others searching too!

Can i add some suggestion though, maybe a short but detailed list of the exterior key points like this for example.

A9X

- Large Flairs
- Brake Ducts
- Bonnet Scoop

- If painted bumper it had Factory 'kidney' styled wheels

- SLR5000 big stencil on bobtail
-etcetc

I could put this together but I do have work at the moment and limited knowledge compared to Red xD but I could make something that can be updated and chaged, I just need more photos. :)

Around the mid 80's when I had an LX SLR5000, I saw what I am sure was an original Papaya 4 door A9X a couple of times around the Sutherland Shire, the owner had redone the stencil on the rear spoiler to read A9X5000, it was done in black from memory

Not.  The L34 has no black under the back bumper or on its door sills.
