That is not totally correct either.

The rear lettering was dependent on the body colour.

I don't really believe this to be true, I think it was more of a case of some people liked the blackedout lettering so they changed the bobtails over or it was done at the dealership at a customers request. From Factory i beleive all A9X sedans had the silver Bobtail lettering.

I like Dr Terrys idea though, tags are not the only thing that make a car what it is. Many people get it wrong when it comes to the paint schemes and decals between these models! a sticky would be great.

LH SL/R 5000, yes it has flares, but paint is still right.

Compare to L34.  Black bum, but stops under rear bumper.  Rear bottom quarter and under doors --> no black.

Not so, I think more left the factory with black stenciling on the bobtail. As RED said there are cars out there that we know to be original, where 2 cars of the same colour got different bobtail paint.

I can't fathom why they would do that on a Model such as the A9X?

Adrian. These cars were special in their day. But not considered too special. They were really just cars.

We paddock bashed GTRs. After all they were just a Torana with a different badge.

My mates had bonfires on successive years for birthdays.

First years centrepiece was a HG GTS Monaro. Topped up the next year with a HQ 2 door.

If only we knew back then  what we know now

They all seem to have homes now though

Not.  The L34 has no black under the back bumper or on its door sills.

Lets not forget, the L34 was just an option on the LH SLR5000, and the A9X was just an option on the LX SLR5000, officially anyway. Realistically there was more to it than that.

Why did some cars have tuxedo black, while others had La plata silver on the rear spoiler? Pretty simple really, rear spoilers would have been ready to bolt on, not painted on the car. I'm sure there would have been a few in black from SLR5000's, just like some A9X sedans had L34 rear flares, using up the stock. The A9X's were effectively going down the line as SLR5000's, front and rear spoilers fitted but no flares, and no stensilingly down the sides.

I doubt there were many A9X's sitting new on showroom floors in 1979. My own car was a late seller, july 1978. This was mostly because there was a black market going on, selling and reselling cars for more than dealers were selling them, the dealers simply started bumping their prices up too. List price for a sedan was $10,600, my car sold for $12,500 new.

I was always under the impression the A9X were built and sold before Bathurst for homologation purposes.Maybe it was karma they did no good in the race(1977)

Im no expert on these cars, but very clearly remember when they were new, and remember noticing that black Vs. silver rear stencil thing....seemed random from what I recall....i.e there were a couple around Newcastle  (white cars ) with silver rear stencil/paint, but one with black as well.

Always reckoned the silver looked better.... we thought for a while "thats because its not just a flared SL/R"" ... but later figured that was not true.

For reference, attached are some pics of a stock as a rock LX SL/R 5000 bought new by a mate of mine. Pic were take when near new. He was fastidious & looked after this car like a baby. Obviously has some accessoried fitted, such as Hustler mags, chrome trumpet exhaust tips, mud flaps, & rear venetian. He worked for the local Holden Dealer & they were also close friends. Curiously, when he ordered this car, he tried hard to get it made without the black bonnet, but holden would not do it. He had to have the black bonnet

Pete.

I know of a Chamois one that was a special order that didn't have the black bonnet or the stensils, it only had black around the side windows. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it, and the bonnet hadn't simply been painted chamois, thats how it came. Looked very plain.

Tried finding another thread to ask but couldnt find one.

So seeing we got the guys with the knowledge already here I will ask.

What were the differences between Group C LH and LX?

????  They are race cars, there is no hard and fast standard for race cars.

Mind you, LX race cars, mainly hatches, did continue to run L34 motors.

Homologation meant a lot of the previous stuff carried over.

Great thread, thank you!

I've just realised that my torrie must have a mix 'in' match of decals.

LX - kind of A9X sedan inspired mock up.

Can I please ask, am I right in seeing these as the two major mistakes?

- No bonnet scoop
- SL/R 5000 front guard decals (actually belong to LH L34)

Front SLR guard decals belong on LH SL/R 5000 and LH SL/R 5000 L34 option.

Not too sure what to do now. I inherited the decals with the car... I feel a bit embarrassed by that. Haha! Best to know now I guess.

A question I often get asked is whether SLR 5000's came out with flares.

They did not.

Really? You get asked that? Usually when I go to a show somewhere people tell me it's not an SLR5000 because it doesn't have flares lol. Along with it's not genuine "cause theres no drop tank and roll cage".

Hi Red I know of a one owner red A9X that had its silver changed to black within the first couple of months because the owners got sick of being pulled over by the cops and when they asked their local highway patrol officer why they were being targeted he told them that all the highway patrol officers had been briefed to keep an eye out for the silver SLR 5000 as this was how they could identify a real A9X as apposed to a mock up (flared) SLR . Cheers Ron

What year is this car? Mine is 1977 & doesn't have the overrides, & has Torana sticker on the nose cone.
