In my very inexperienced opinion....The CSA at the entry is going to be tiny compared to a 12 port, you will likely get the bottom end your chasing, but no where near the top end you can get from a well modded factory 12 port.....
Cheers.

Well, I just had a 'what the hell happened there' moment. Just changed the YT head for another fresh one. Bought Vizards 'how to port etc' book, gave the head a good going over. It's a 173 unit thats had the chambers opened up... but still will end up with 10.06 comp.
I've cut/drilled/tapped for the screw in studs, threw it on, haven't quite finished yet.
Then decided to have a quick look at the old one. I bought it new around '89, been planed a coupla times, I gave the ports a quick clean up once. However, it's not this head??????? I do remember buying another YT some time ago, but not swapping them over without a 'bit of work'. Std open chambers, no work at all in the ports, zorst valves in need of relapping, guides rooted. The way the engine was going (quite well!) I can't wait to fire it up and test drive it! Higher comp, much better ports, short turn, guide bosses, etc.
I'd love to know where the original one went too.

For simplicity and through sheer frustration I've gone to a standard type acl race series head gasket, never actually run this engine with one, either been 080 copper, 040 copper or 040 mls! Forget the gas for now, I just want to drive it.
Anyway, bolted it back together & fired it up.
I'm going to try the locked dizzy approach so I know for sure what timimg I have, hopefully it can take around the 30 degree & up mark.
Then it's back to the track.

Are you still running 11.5:1 comp.?
What fuel?
Where did you get the ACL gasket from? I've been having trouble getting one since ACL stopped production.

One is now on the engine, the other I used as a dummy gasket when the block had o-rings so it has those grooves in it, but it could still be used.
Compression is at 11.5 and just going to stay with 98 until the engine goes into the other car.

I know this is a late reply.... Comp test today came in at 235 psi staticHi James,
Can't hear the ping over the exhaust?![]()
Seriously now, I've never run that sort of combo of comp/cam/timing. Out of curiosity, what calculated dynamic, and psi do you see on a comp test?
Cheers.

Have you got the engine apart yet James for inspection?
No not yet, just pulled out the two lifters that weren't moving and shone a torch down the holes. The lobes are intact and I can see the core of the cam isn't moving when the engine is turning over.

Turns out there's a check/line valve in the far end of the master that holds some initial pressure when using drum brakes... that you REMOVE when you fit discs. Otherwise it's like driving around everywhere with your foot 1/4 down on the brakes!
So my hq front & rear commo calipers won't be hanging on any longer.
Think I've found a big part of my problem, but I'm still playing with the carbs.
Cheers

Good Catch Jonesy. Are you gonna run the EH down the track with this set up again before the German is unleashed?
