I don't suppose Ian remembered any specific details about the car? such as who he sold it to. I only ask because I was curious about this orange Xu-1, not so much this car but what seems to be hiding behind it. I know it's a long shot and could be an LH but the formatting had me interested.

Ian sold his white GTR in 1975 he told me, i dont get what you are saying here with behind it ???.

He said it was a GTR with a rear spoiler and went really well, i find it strange he has no photos of it at all, he could afford to live in Toorak buy couldnt afford a Camera lol. He even signed a letter for me for Vic Roads Archive to search under his name, they said they need a Vic rego number to look for Ian's GTR.

I think back then, cameras were more expensive than Toorak and standard cars were more expensive than the modified and certain cars weren't historically important enough to warrant a photograph especially if it's just a stepping stone to an slr5000.

My brother in law put me onto Ian Wansley as they have been mates since university days. My brother in law once drove this torana and his comment was " it went like stink".

Ian did live in Toorak at the time. Believe he sold it and bought a TR6.

I too had many interesting cars when I was young and didn't have a camera.

Sounds like he went through a few cars at the time huh!

I did notice that the prefix 20 became 9822 which seems to lead to Linlithgow Ave,  just off Toorak Rd.

If the number is still correct that is, there's a lot of new units out that way.

circa 1972.

This has always been a very intriguing picture that solved a little mystery a few years back. Notice that it is meant to showcase essentially the total Torana, Holden and Statesman range available in Australia in (I think) early 1973. Almost every lux level / body shape is there with a few select ones missing such as Belmont ute and Belmont wagon, assuming the last car in the LH line is a Monaro and the second car in the 2nd row from the right is a Belmont sedan. There may be an S sedan missing assuming the last car in the 2nd row from the right is an S 2 door and the one in front of it is an SL sedan.

So one would assume there is no export models, BUT look at the second car in the 2nd row from the left. It is a HQ Caprice or HQ Chevrolet 350 (same thing just changed names probably around this time, special vehicle package code XU7)??? What the hell is that doing there? And how is it registered, remembering these cars had no ADR plate on them.

What we believe is they were available to purchase within Australian shores by foreign Consulates, so technically they are an export. But in order to leave the consulates they must have been able to be registered by some special arrangement in most likely the ACT although there were and still are consulates in Perth, Sydney etc. This explains why a few have turned up here in Australia seemingly never having left the country. As well as having no ADR plate they have no GMH engine number on them, just the St Catharine's engine plant assembly code on them.

I'm intrigued as to which pink that GTR XU1 is. There are two HQ's in 'Orchid Metallic' but the XU1 appears to be a darker pink in that pic, perhaps it was one of the last SMP cars made in early 73?

It may be Salamanca Red and the Belmont or Kingswood wagon and the GTR are Tangerine. I think the LS at the back may be Rose not Orchid, but it may also be Orchid.

I think the cab-chassis may be Hymix Orange, also called I think Turnpike Orange.

Note also the slope of the bank is deceptive. You can see the reflection of the Deville on one side and the Armco on the other which is throwing off the colours

I reckon the GTR and the GTS are both Tangerine as are the HQ wagon and the 4 banger LJ behind the blue panel van.

You may be right about the XU1 being Salamanca Red but it does appear to have a dark pinkish appearance.

That Photo is in 1973, it was taken out at Lang Lang for Holdens 25th Anniversary, the LJ XU1 is a Purr Pull Colour in that Picture.

The light has effected its Colour, but its colour is Purr Pull, all the cars in Pic i believe were all 1973 Models for the 25th Anniversary, it has Orange indicator covers, so its a 1973 model.

54 Lansell Road Toorak was his address at the time when he owned the LJ GTR V8, he does not live in Toorak these days.

Anyone know what year the two Lj's are? to me the indicators kind of look like a mix of orange and white but it could just be a reflection from the road?
