Ive used KBS rust seal and you really need to rinse off the converter properly.

While im happy with with its prep and application I had issues with the finish.

I used satin rust seal , when i brushed it on,  it would dry with what I would call a semi gloss look.

However when i sprayed it, it definitely looked satin.

Another issue is the satin top coat which is UV stabilized, when sprayed would dry more flat than satin.

So you're saying both the satin rust seal and top coat give a slightly more glossy finish brushed on and flatter when sprayed?

I havnt used those particular products, but it would make sense as film thickness seems to change the sheen.

Spray satins/matts on heavilly usually gives a glossyer finish than spraying them on lightly.

What I'm saying and Bomber reiterated is that when KBS is brushed on , it will dry more glossy than the stated finished product.

The Rust seal definately looked Satin when it was sparayed.

But I what I found is that the "Rust Seal Satin black"  and the "Rock Hard Chassis Top Coat  Satin Black " products where not the same satin finish.

I had to spray the Rock Hard chassis black top coat satin, very heavily to make it look satin. Otherwise is would have turned out Flat not satin.

Given the hate we all have for the 'r' word (so much worse than either the 'f' or 'c' words in my view) and that some of the posts in this thread are getting onto 10 years old I was hoping some of the original posters in this thread could give their long term comments on the effectiveness of POR15, KBS etc. Long term feedback like this would be of great benefit to anyone doing a current or future project(and this is the sticky).

How has it stood up?

Has rust come back? If it has was this due to the product being crap or other reason? Poor prep, rusted through from other side, physical damage etc?

Has it cracked, delaminated, peeled etc? (you read some forums and everyone says POR15 cracks, other forums and no one has that problem)

Would you use the same product again? Have you found a better product?

Long term thoughts on cavity waxes? Any particular good/bad?

Any tips for Torana problem areas and treatments used? Especially things like hatch C pillars, plenum chambers, cavities etc where access is between poor and nil?

This has been a good test for KBS.

A client of mine asked me to weld up a cactus shape from a photo she supplied. I used mild steel rod and mig welded the joins.

Then I prepped it with Rust Blast and two coats of Rust Seal black gloss.

This has been hanging on an exterior wall for 7 years without a trace of rust forming. Yes, the gloss has turned to mat but I'm really happy with the result.

That's no good, Marty... it's cactus!

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Nice piece of lawn art though (if you'd call it that), shows how simple a great effect can be with a little imagination! I reckon a free-standing 3D version of that would sell like hot cakes at bunnings.

Does KBS come in green?

Adrian at KBS says that the Rust Seal is not UV-stable. He said if you're painting a bullbar or something, then you absolutely are supposed to coat it in the "Black Top" or something afterwards (if you leave it a while, you need to scuff it up in ~240 first) or it'll go chalky & cloudy.

If that cactus was coated in Rust Seal and then Black Top, it would be a much better test. It SHOULD still be the same as the day you painted it.

Hi Heath,

I did realise that at the time but was told the product doesn't loose its protective quality if no Black top applied, so this was a great test for that and matt looks better than gloss in this instant.

Hi Gary, took me a while to see it but now I do. Could be better than the 'Rabbit' .......the 'Cactus'

I didnt think they had that many..

I've tried silver and it isn't as effective as black.

Did you paint out of the tin? that will do it every time. You need to stir and pour into another cup and get lid back on tin ASAP. it cures with air and moisture. Also helps if you have a MIG squirt some argon gas in the tin, gets rid of the air. But there is also a shelf life, depending where you buy from you need to check how old it is, some places have it sitting on shelf a long time. I've found the new it is the better it goes on.

in it and poured it into another small container.

Id say i got an old one.i doubt i will use anymore as
Its quite expensive when you dont use much..
