Hi everyone,

I am after some advice on tuning my Red 202 in my HQ.

The engine was rebuilt in 2007 after the main bearings died and during the rebuild I had the cam modified (cant tell you the grind off the top of my head, but its nothing extreme). It also had some port work done to the head and hardened seats installed. From that point it was primarily run on LPG with regular visits to the gas shop to keep it in tune.

In the last 18months the car has undergone a restoration, with the LPG being thown in the bin. Its just back on the road in the last week or two.

It has the standard Stromberg carby on it (BVX.... or what ever it is) and i believe its running a little on the lean side due to the modifications made during the engine rebuild. During the rebuild the engine builder said I may have to do something with the carby should it ever go back to pretrol only.

She stumbles a little on take off and has a slight hesitation when cruising at constant speed. When you put your foot down the acceleration is good and smooth. The hesitation and stumble is cured with a small amount of choke being applied.

The carby is in good nick with a new pump and seal kit in it.

These I am led to believe are indications of it running a little lean?

Timing is good and compression is good also. Its running a Bosch HEI ignition.

The stombergs are a fixed jet, so i suppose the options i have are to drill the jet out to give it a bit more fuel, or has ony one tried the variable jets you can get for these? I dont really want to be mucking round with other carbs if i can avoid it.

Any thoughts out there??

I'm not after a performance engine, just don't want to be burning the valves etc...

Your thoughts and or corrections on mine above would be greatly appreciated!!

A couple of pics too...

Nice.

Just off idle and steady cruise shiuld still be on the idle circuit.

Have you tried taking the idle mixture screw out half a turn to see how it affects driveability?

How old is the fuel ?

Are you using Premium unleaded ?

Is it getting hot ?

I used to basically set the idle mixture on the single barrel Stromberg on my HJ with the temperature guage. I'd lean it off if it seemed a bit thiirsty, then watch the guage and if it started to get hot I'd richen it up a bit. Might be worth checking the end of the screw too. They get eaten away.

Hi Guys,

Cheers for the positive comments on the car. I've had her for 10yrs or so, so it been great to see the end result. Tried to keep the restoration pretty much original throughout. There's been a lot of time put into her in the last 18months or so. I have always wanted to rebuild a car, and the results have been worthwhile! I can't claim any credit on the paint work though..

I think you both may have landed on the prob there.

The fuel is new, and at present is a combo of premo and regular.

Its difficult to get a handle on its temp as its got a temperature switch and not a gauge in it and i dont have an IR thermometer. It does not get hot when running, however if its been running a while and you shut it down, then leave it for a few minutes and switch it back on the temp light will stay on for 10 -15 seconds maybe before it get a flush of cool water through it, so it could be running a little warm.

I'll have a go with the idle mixture tonight. So hopefully it will sort it!!

Thanks for your help.

My LC does that too. Temp will be halfway and you switch it off, only to find that the temp jumps all the way to the end when you switch it back on. Slowly goes down after a short while.

Its called heat soak.

Pretty well every water cooled engine does it.

Cheers.

I should add that when I had the HJ pano 90% of my driving was 85 to 95 kph on long fairly straight flat roads so it was easy to keep an eye on consumption etc.

Nice green. A set of 15" GTS wheels would really set it off.

Thanks guys,

I pulled the idle mixture srew out and there was a bit of dirt in there so i set it again along with the idle and it has sorted itself out. My more well behaved now. I'll keep an eye on the fuel usage may tinker with it over time.

Yeah, she's the original green, the painter/panel shop i used did a fantastic job!! I cant fault it all.

The wheels are on the to do list, after a new exhaust that doesnt sound like a wet fart. But that will be down the track a little.

So after more troubles with the idle and poor running and a generally unhappy engine I have located the issue.

The idle tube was obstructed with dirt. No wonder it was running like a heap of crap.

Better late than never!
