Like I've said, you can present a car as anything you like, pretend it's an A9X, XU1, race car whatever, but when you go to sell it, thats when the trouble begins.

Saying something is what it ain't is one thing, hell everyone from Woolworths to the PM do it, putting the wrong identifier plates on the wrong car is illegal, presented or not.Like I've said, you can present a car as anything you like, pretend it's an A9X, XU1, race car whatever, but when you go to sell it, thats when the trouble begins.

I agree, I dislike greatly people who present something as something it is not when they know full well it isn't

Where do they get the tags? Are they finding wrecks with good tags? Or stealing cars with good tags? Or are they forging tags themselves?

Wherever they can get their hands on them, to answer; all of the above.

What your saying sounds pretty straight forward, LX SL parted out as a SL/R 5000, anyone who can read tags would be able to tell it is a SL.Just out of curiousity

Here? A lot of us.
The average punter however wouldn't know squat. One guy saw my car and called it a Torano.

I well remember a few years ago, looking at the tags on an LH SL/R5000 at a car show. I was reading the ID numbers out loud (a bit too loud as it turns out) & it read as a 1900 SL.
The owner was only a few metres away & was a bit disappointed when he heard this. Apparently he'd only purchased it recently for $30,000+ from a car yard, so he went storming back to the dealer. I wouldn't mind being a 'fly on the wall' during the ensuing conversation.

Ok let me ask this way
If you strip an SLR5000 and an S model back to bare shell and removed the tags can anyone tell which shell is which?

When you say bare shell, do you mean minus all add on components; interior, engine, brake booster, diff, gearbox, front crossmember, steering and brakes?

Hi Kirk,
That is a very good time to have the Naked Shell weighed. Dave I
p.s. hoping someone has the Shell detail differences between the LX SLR and the S/SL, could be as little as an extra brake bracket
A9X is a completely different story

Pick an SL by the trim mountings lugs? Like the tail light surrounds etc. There's bound to be other differences but that's just one off the top of my head.
