Three decades or so ago I wrote on the box "new LJ XU1 pushrod' and it measures 156mm.

LJ XU1, if what I wrote on the box is correct. That's why I was hoping Neil could confirm the part number.

Dave, I put the new pushrod into an old XU1 booster this morning and without the reaction disc it protrudes 3mm past the face of the can. New reaction disc is 5mm thick (not including the little nipple on the back) so total length past the can face with reaction disc installed would be 8mm.

Conclusion, I must have an LC XU1 m/cyl pushrod? not LJ.

Bit pissed off if that is the case as I found the purchase docket for all the new booster 'spare' spare parts (incl this pushrod) I bought back in 1986 for my LJ XU1 booster.

see the disc,
it is at the front of the booster, so it seals the Vacuum, a threaded extension wouldn't seat there,
but if a shorter rod made it to there, and extension thread will work for the extra 17mm

I was just thinking about the seal on the push rod and even with the short push rod the main body of the push rod has to protrude far enough for the seal not to be on the threaded section. So regardless of whether it's a Lc or Lj rod they must both have enough length to reach the seal and beyond.

Dave I. your correct in saying that I wouldn't want the brakes to fail, they're probably the most important part of the car to get right.

Yes they are James,

The thread is special too, it has a tight fit to stay put, where as the threaded bar thread diametre would be under-size and may move, if anyone were to use that method, the thread should bottom out in the shaft so it could not move away from the Master Cylinder. Dave I

I had a look at my std lj push rod and master cylinder this morning. The master cylinder wouldn't go onto the booster all the way, about 6mm short. Upon close inspection of the push rod I could see a colour variation on the thread. Putting it back in the master cylinder and measuring the protrusion I had 31mm. According to previous posts this length should be 25mm, so I screwed the rod in to the colour change on the thread and tested again. Now this gave me a 25mm protrusion and the master cylinder fits. To check I then measured how far I could put the push rod into the master cylinder (40mm) and subtracted the length of the rear of the master cylinder past the flange (15mm), this gives me 25mm, so these sizes all tie in together.

So my revision for the rod lengths are :
Std
Lj =101mm
Lc =84mm. (101 -17 shorter than Lj's)

Xu1
Lj =173mm. Dave I. Has 180mm from a LH Torana , however S Pack has 156mm Nos item (Lc xu1) so 156 +17 =173 mm
Lc =156mm as per S Pack's nos item.

Any confirmation by others on these sizes is welcome.

Last week I finally fitted my lj big nut master cylinder with the xu1 booster. First I set the push rod at 173 mm, but the pedal had too much travel before the brakes started to come into effect. I then added 5mm to the length but the brakes were on without the pedal being depressed.
I've now settled on 175 mm for the push rod length, which feels good so far.

Just for the record the push rod was previously set to 158mm not the 156mm as stated above for the Lc booster and master cylinder. I got an extension made up so I could achieve the required length to suit the Lj master cylinder.

Hello James,

Great to see she is all sorted.

I got an extension made up so I could achieve the required length to suit the Lj master cylinder.

Anyone know if the different length pushrods can be bought seperately?
