Is it such a bad car to drive/own or it is just the way it looks?

In my opinion

The LX was the best
The UC was let down with syling on the rear lights
No V8 option was given
The interior started to get "soft"

Yes it had better suspension and other good features like the tunnel mount handbrake
But it had crap features too like the gawdy dash and troublesome centre bearing tailshaft design

To answer the question:

Well, unfortunately in our shallow society, people tend to rate looks and appearance with certian importance. :<_<:

Take me for example, i'm an ugly c*nt and I take sh!t all the time, so I drive an LX Torry to improve my appearance. :D

I personally believe the UC was not that bad , but could have been so much better. The Commodore was the killer, no doubt at all. No V8, the lights and some of the styling was dissapointing to say the least, basically every model Torry from the lc onwards gradually improved but then the UC seemed to go backwards, and history has proven the Commodore was GMH'S car of the future. Ive seen some really nice customised UC's in magazines over the years, 350 Chev , nice paint, wheels, lowered, the potential is there.

UC front end looks like Its an LH wearing NERD GLASSES!

Rear end kinda looks unfinished or something... something missing

Just my opinion. Some UC's do look OK tho.

Rear lights certainly dont do it any favours. keep in mind it had the complete RTS package so its handling was certainly up there and the interior was OK. The front grill & lights werer certainly a change in direction.

I suppose having no race heritage & at the time, being sold alongside the new VB commodore, it was always going to struggle for popularity. I suppose its a matter of opinion.

L33 LOW COMPRESSION 253 FROM MEMORY. UC was a deliberate letdown as Holden knew it was going to drop it from the range anyway due to the smaller VB Dunnydore.

You have to wonder how the UC would have been treated if GMH had put a V8 in it and Brocky had raced it. Not so sure if looks would have been an issue then..perhaps and perhaps not.

troublesome centre bearing tailshaft design

hey neil i dont mean to be rude but are you sure about that as ive had 4 UCs and they all had one piece tail shafts. i liked the UCs i thought they were the better torana right up until you get to the tail lights. dont get me wrong i love my SLR but the UC out handles it in every way except performance, but thats not too hard to fix

its mainly because they are an Ugly Car, their name even says it, UC!

sure you can make them look ok, but for the same amount of effort you can have a LH/X handling better than a UC, and looking better, with a V8.
if I was going to get a UC it would have to be a hatch, and I would do something about the tail lights

Well, as a new UC owner (2nd one actually....I had one 12 yrs ago) I'll step up to the plate and say this...
"The taillights ARE butt ugly!"
And yes, the interior is a bit soft, :<_<: but throw in some decent gauges and a tuff twirler and things aren't so bad.
There's no doubting that had GMH put some time and effort into the styling, it could have been a much nicer unit.
But they didn't, thus the 'ugly duckling' was born.

However, with the solid mounted steering rack, RTS and a Salisbury diff, surely they can be made to drive sweetly... and what's stopping V8's being dropped in? A mate of mine is building a UC hatch with a 350 Chev to go in, VT brakes etc.... so that'll be a nice cruiser for sure. :D
And keithy seems to have done a great job with his :spoton: ... and I'm sure most of us have seen the video of toranaz blast up the street.
And Sarsha's V8 UC gets in and amongst the smoke in the burnout comps :D

There's nothing can't be done to the old UC that hasn't been done to LH/LX. I even tossed around the idea of dropping the 253 in.

But that's another thread......?

So that's my take on the UC.... as I see it.
I'm sure I read somewhere there were more UC's built than LX(?) don't quote me there though.... so there should be a lot of clean examples hiding out there somewhere, so cheap parts and panels are going to be popping up and then I guess that'll make them popular. It's funny how things happen, could they be the next model to do up for P platers and the like?

Anything to keep the name out there on the roads.

Proud Torana owner.
(I currently have a LX Hatch in the grudge you know!)

GMH got it wrong big time with the UC in the looks department. Lets face it, a car gets it's poularity from a couple of things.
The look is appealing (most important for the average joe)
Sucsses on the race track
Affordability and running costs

A sad fact for the UC is it never fit into any of these catagories.
The front end is not attractive and the rear end :fool: I've never heard one person say they like the tail lights.

The LH looked good and had some success on the track than the LX looked tuff especially with the flairs, spoiler, scoope and bobtail and dominated circuit racing. The UC just looked wimppy in comparison and did not have the V8 grunt to change that view. A pitty realy as it did have RTSII and the better diff (it wasn't enough thou).

Some people have done great things to their UC's and it's a credit to them. I would love to see some one do some thing with the tail light set up. They would be on a real winner and could make some $ out of it.

I love the look of the UC. But blown old technology V8s and UCs don't match.
That doesn't mean I don't like american or aussie muscle, but a more refined vehicle desserves more of a refined motor if you know what I mean.

Hense the popularity of Injected Buick and Nissan motors in UC Toranas.

to put it into a metaphor, a UC is like a girl:
the face isnt the greatest, a little geeky, but hey, some like that.
the body is pretty good, and she handles herself pretty well.

but that arse..........

What do they say?, beauty is only skin deep...........but ugly goes right to the bone.
Im sure this topic has been done b4, and Im sure I wrote similar stuff........
I agree the LX looks better, but if you're in the market for a 2nd hand stock torrie the UC comes with a far better list of standard equipment than if you start off with a standard LH or LX would cost a lot to bring up to the same level, thats why I ended up with 3 of them, sure some LX's got front discs, but at least I knew every UC i looked at had the following and was considerably newer:
Centre handbrake
QH headlights
wipers on stalk
Front discs
Bucket seats
Floor shift
Salisbury
Rwindow demister
Laminated screen? not sure about that one
RTS
5.5in rims
colour coded dash.....(very important)
there's possibly more.

makka, I think you nailed it....

on the other hand, devil's, you are right about the standard inclusion list.... a lot further advanced than the LH/LX....

Not even the genuine sunbirds say sunbird, they all say Torana!, but one can pick up if its a sunbird from the model code, engine trans and diff codes.
