Hi Graham

Been looking in to this of late myself and I'm little confused on why there are different date stampings(eg. some with letters and some without)

From what I have seen the ones that have just numbers are fairly easy to distinguish.

The pic below, this tail shaft came out of a 9th month 72 Adelaide  built 4door that I wrecked.

35.2 would be 35th week of 1972

The other shafts that have letters I can only assume that the letter means the month of the year but could be wrong.

Who knows on why they had different formats, could be another Adelaide/Brissy thing.

I have other good examples of codes on tail shafts here, when I get a chance I post some more up.

cheers Dane

Very interesting Dane, there seems to be real variation in these codes.
That's three tail shafts all with different style of codes.

Hopefully someone out there has some answers.

Great job on you're xu-1 Dane lovely car.

Cheers Graham .

Hi Dane

I think Anthony is saying the letter code denoting the propeller shaft's engine/transmission application was added to the date code around mid 1973?

Cheers

Dave.

Can anyone give me some dimensions of the letters / numbers of these codes plus a location of how far along the tailshaft they normally are found as I plan on trying to replicate this soon when I paint the tailshaft.

James I will try and find the template I made to do mine tho obviously you may need different numbers.

Failing that I have a tail shaft here that has a perfect date code on it that I can send you some dimensions, just give me a few days.

cheers Dane

Thanks Crabba for your information and Dane I would appreciate if you could get me the specs. Since our cars are 7th and 8th month 73 the codes may be similar, as long as it's not later than 27/7/73.

Hi all,

I am no expert on the LC/LJ toranas. Are all of the tail shafts painted red? My friends LJ two door started its life as an automatic but at some stage a M20 went in. The tailshaft is red I will check the date codes on it today.
Phillip
