Didn't get many photos of the Rocket over the weekend - we were too busy!! Here are what I have.

Speed Week put a GoPro in the car, but we'll need to wait and hear from Grant about what is happening there.

Steve,

there some good photos. A little update on things;

The block is back from getting the lifter bores bushed

I picked up the head today and also had the intake manifolds matched ported and also cleaned up and the internals ported

My 25 spline axles are ready

Sent off my HQ sump to be modified for a new ASR race  sump

things to do until we can start boring and ordering rods and pistons;

still waiting on the crank to be lightened

things that aren't working;

the oil catch can needs to be undone and put some baffles into the internals to " re route " the air flow away from the outlet

the alternator - it's FU)@@ked and i need to buy a new one

the current diff does not have diff baffles and i need to build a new diff up with baffles ( which i have )

Things that i have been doing;

i am in the last stages of making an instrument pod for where the radio goes so i can re route the temp and oil gauges as it's really hard to see

James D has been getting the parts for the webbers together and he has ordered half the parts sort of with quiet a few parts to go

What are the lifter bore bushes made of, I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Am I correct in thinking that the bushes restrict oil to the top and provide more oil the the critical bottom end? do you mind saying how much this mod costs.

regards

Well you can run a solid without doing it but you cannot run a roller cam without doing this

John if you are going to rev it then one of the advantages is that it stops to oil going upstairs AND also limits oil galleys that can leak oil and hence assists in pressure department.

$800 including bushes, boring and fitting + honing

there is probably double the work when you thing about boring an engine and fitting a sleave to a damaged cylinder with these there's 12

bronze or brass - they look like brass but i think they are bronze - someone may correct as i didnt pay that much attention when discussing the material

Bronze. Also helps with any misalignment in the lifter bores when it was originally machined.

update - I've sold another Kid !

been a bit slack on the updates but there is plenty going on. The following works are in progress or have been done

1) crank - wedged up ( knifed edged )  back at engine shop for measuring rods - then off to get nitrated- then back to the shop

2) been working on some lower rear control arms and boxing them in and these should be finished next week

3) building new front lower control arms with proper strengthening plates and not U bolts as per what i have now  - i may weld some lower parts in but boxing is the go

4) my detroit has been checked and changed over to 3.36 and ready to bolt up

5) the new axles have been done to suit the 25 spline center

6) new race sump ordered

will start to post a few photos as i get stuff sorted over the next few weeks.

yeah col its getting close and I'm glad that it's been moving slowly as it gives me time to sort some items and not make mistakes.

Was talking to Mike the engine builder today and the discussion of roller rockers came up - now YT are $800 and a US brand are $400. Now yt are made in vic and the us in china. both good quality.

it was pretty interesting to see the nitride of the crank process 12 hours in the oven/ solution - the bloke said the temp was 500 degrees C and the crank was still hot 4 hours after coming out of the facility - hence the paper wrapped around the crank.

we need to linish the journals again and it's all good to go ready for balancing when we get the rods and pistons.

The finish on the crank was a " light " and you can get medium and heavy - the medium and heavy actually add thickness to the journal and need to be re sized ( so i was told today).

never heard of this finish on the crank before but Mike say's that it just gives it a bit more durability and that the nitride penetrates the metal enough - the cost was $173-

this crank would have been touched 5 times;

  • linish and measure journals
  • crack test
  • machined to wedge up
  • nitride
  • linish journals
  • balance rotating assembly

Are you running the kidney chamber head or the open chamber head and what ratio rollers are you using

Any flow numbers for the head?

no kevin as i took the head prior to assembly. I sort of did want to get these but there is a bloke up the road i can get it flowed at.

Peter - running a closed chamber head off a 173 motor. Not sure what ratio rockers yet.

We have hit a snag and the rods we want are not available for at least a month.

Well mate I've had a yarn over the phone but not read this thread. . Awesome. This really shows the level of commitment required to race nc at high level. Great read! !

Yeah Dan, I seem to have more jobs to do on this car  then racing undertaken - I'm over for the year.

Looks like i will have to re build the current engine for the time being, it's a known quantity 202 hp  and will go back together with no issues.

Will probably put Webbers on it this time round however i just need to go racing with as little fuss as possible

BUT it may be  out with the current motor  - rings bearings - head clean and new valve springs + maybe new cam = then back in with the SU's atached

I was so close to pulling this new motor off.- spewen

yep.

I can go to a honda journal which means grinding the crank.

I'll have to go and have a look and search for a replacement - but looks like 6- 8 weeks at this stage.

I may just pull the old girl down and give it a clean up - but as usual may result in a re bore as i don't know at what stage it's at.

your still running the star fires arn't u.

I had similar issue with my build last year. Not sure what brand rods we using but my builder don't use average. . Always hurts more when you're waiting one something like this!

dan,

i can get custom rods built here to any length - the also have a offset bottom cap ( think thats what it's called ) - it sits at about 4 and 8 o'clock and is said to reduce stretching - there about double the price of the crank shaft rebuilders ( they have none)

the problem is that if i go down to a honda journal then this means the crank will for ever only take a honda sized rod

http://www.cunninghamrods.com/

I'm going to have a talk over the chrissy brake

Stay tunned for some major work on the car over the next 25 days

Your only grinding the journal .009, pretty standard practice.
You could still grind the journal .020 under to use a holden rod again (but why wouldya).
Likely to have cracks on no.6 big end long before you need to replace a set of steel rods.

There's so many off the shelf rods (scat, eagle, crower, Carrillo), why bother getting them custom made?
