i really think were onto something here;

torana's

broken parts

hip replacements

old blokes

Col hug the corner prior, don't swing wide, late apex - I went drift the first corner, swing wide , brake and then. tight apex ( but didn't make the apex lol) - have a red hot go up there it's such and awesome track

Pete - got the Pm. -  and i would never think about bending the NC rules and putting some negative camber on the rear diff - FFS that would be cheating

I may be coming down to PI next year for festival of speed

G

Wayne - great trip all round.

You probably wouldn't but many an owner has been caught out by not knowing it was done to their car for them without their knowing it.

I put it as a PM as I wanted to keep it between just us.

It wasn't meant as a criticism  or alledging that you would bend the rules. Sorry if that was the way that it came across.

Yes it is way too high. No revs on the engine and in most places it would be out of the power band and really slow out of the corners.

I'm using a 3.36. I originally used a 3.08 but the car was a slug out of the slow corners.

I use a 3.36 at Sandown and a 3.55 at Winton.

I have used a 3.9 at Winton was quick off the line and round the track only had to use 3 rd and 4th.

hi pete - no worries at all and no offence taken, i did just tell him to put it back straight and was not interested in building some changes into the diff as it was more expensive and i had no idea what i actually needed or wanted - so it was like asking the keynan marathon team " what the austrian bob sled team " used on their bobsled settings !!

I told him;

i run at the back

there is no sheep stations

So If anything it may be just very slight as i didn't want to pay and for me it's just not worth it at this stage. If I could have got another housing it would have been cheaper - but couldn't find one. It's all good..

Col - Id run this at bathurst

short M20 ratio 3.08

I got punished with the the long third gear. Last year the fast cars were running a 3.36- but that's a 7500-8000K run down the shute.

This year with the 3.08 wound out till 6800 only - year i blew the motor 7500

Diff in the car 6 hours
Bleed brakes 6 hours
change gearbox. 3 hours.
Change radiator. 2 hours.
Fit bumpers. 2 hours
Fit grille. 1 hour
Fit front rear lights. 3 hours
Relocate battery. 3 hours

Total 26 hours work. Allow 50% increase for delays and stuff not fitting easily etc etc
Means. 39 hours or about 5 full normal days work.
Better get your act together and cancel sleep

Then there is the obligatory nut and bolt check.

Good luck with it all.

AHH Pete,

warp speed happened today. but most importantly i spent most of the day talking to the owner of the Bill paterson Lh torana at his work shop. I put the rocket there for the suspension which he is good at and spent most of the earlier years running K Mac - hes local in brooky. that was the start of the issues which lead to the bent diff.

Set out this morning to pick up said finished diff and I explain my self to people that are experts in their field as a blunt instrument. Today was one of thoes days that i was in the presents of two very smart people in their field;

Dave Bonsjak engineering - he done the diff and proceed to enlighten me of all the things that were wrong with the last set up diff wise - after talking to him at length I was glad that he took the time to make and machine all the little things up and fit them properly.

The hardie spicers tail shaft - pls dont buy a this tail shaft - get really good yokes that are balance internally - if you use any yoke then make sure that the ends are the best you can afford, the hardies ones are cast and at best off center - so there was a fair bit of careful work done the tailshaft - the end yokes were machined and trimmed up and then all re balanced - the weight in his assessement was 60 degress out from where it should be - so we should have a smoother ride now down the shute

I was fortunate today to have discussions and guidance, AT 6amp today i headed off to pick up the diff and try and get it back to the car, 11am i arrived back and Michael ward of wardsports where the car is has allowed me to use the workshop and put the diff into the car, change the box over and get everything back on the wheels and driving. Big day but it's in and done.

I will have to take monday off and get the rest of the items done. As he got the bill patterson Lh torana ready for muscle car masters, he was kind enough to let me use his workshop and hosts and get the above done. I was truly blessed today and felt really lucky just to have this experience

I think were back in the race big bopper and may even make friday practice, the MCN weekend is about enjoying the event , i dont really care if i start at the back of the grid , it's been a massive effort to get the car back on the starting grid after the crash.

If your around on the MCN weekend come over and say hello. pull up a chair and sit for a while

I set out 7 weeks ago to have this sorted and give me some time LOL

tired G

Hi Tired G...

You are a doer, that's for sure mate. Nice work.

Just a question if I can - I'm doing the 3 core Ebay radiator and Keith Croft oversize pulley job, in readiness for the Bathurst Challenge event.

Nothing to do with Keiths stuff, same with factory - but the clearance between the water pump pulley 4 x retaining bolts  -  and the 3 core radiator - is only about 5mm.

Just concerned about engine forward / aft moovement when out on the track......5mm seems pretty tight to me?

I'll phot and send a pic to Greg and he can post or share it as I have no idea how to do it.

Good luck on the weekend Grant.
The tailshaft info is interesting to hear, I have a Hardy Spicer set up item on my car. I assume that it's possibly got the same flaws. Did you modify your existing tailshaft or make up a new one?

Since the yoke that joins the tailshaft and gearbox is cast also I bet that's another item that could do with some work. I've wondered the same thing about the GMH red motor water pump pulley in the past as they look a bit rough, I bet a billet type machined up pulley would have less vibration than the factory ones. Aeroflow make them for the 253 & 308 but not the good old 202.

Seems that things didn't go as planned for Grant at MCM. I'll let him tell the story. The photos I've seen of the car showed it looking good.

I have sufficiently come to terms again with the meaning of failure. Failure is trying to rev the shit out of a motor that was not designed to rev over 4800 rpm in standard trim.

I have dusted my self off and agreed it's just a motor. No 1 rod let go but it seems the block does not have a hole - the sump does so lets hope that there is not too much damage inside.

could be a short rebuilt'

new crank - or regrind down

new rod

new piston

hopefully it's only this.

apart from this the car was running 1.54 and that was a good time on the Toyo Tyre , small issue with the repaired side wheel arch where by it was rubbing on the Toyo tyre. Changing to the yokohama tyre next time as the shoulder is rounded and not as square as the toyo.

Car was feeling really strong apart from the above issues, which seems to add to the title of " they go the best prior to going bang"

Didn't see the light come on for low oil pressure but heard the noise and this what made me pull in.

one more millimeter.

MMMM that LH is seeming like a better race car.

thinking of selling the GTR as well ATM

pull the motor out over christmas and rebuild ready for next year.

G

that's the third motor Paul has done -man i felt that pain for him with this event and a failure again.

thanks Col for the words, but if you go racing then " expect what you get and don't get upset " - borrow this one off the kids lecture line when eating vegies .

stil hurts financially and effort to get the car to the race, really was looking forward to that torana race and having a big hit out and thought that i may go close to a 5-6 placing based on times.

my view is that that the yoko is a better tyre all round.  But there is one car that is running a pretty shitty tyre and still beating me, but he has had 20+ years in that car and it's well refined all round.

NIL now running toyo i think,

I struggled with the new change from the old set up to the new compound, last weekend at MCM i think that i found out where they should be starting on cold temp to run an 8 lap race - so not all bad

A couple of pictures of Grant and the Rocket in the pits at MCM.

Grant is a bloke who is prepared to take a 6lb sledge hammer to a freshly painted new guard, in order to go faster. And always with a smile on his face.

Sorry your weekend did not go to plan.

Don't abandon the Rocket to race the big four door. Your day will come Grant.

Concrete work platform. Sheer bloody luxury.
There is an old adage if something won't move get a bigger hammer.

I'm running the Kuhmo. OK but they are now only really suitable for the trailer as they are very hard. About 6+ years old now.
