Racing / regularity always brings out issues with cars, this meeting Brakes seemed to be issue. In the background i have been working on getting a 4 spot caliper set up for the car and have found and cleaned the volvo calipers.

I now just need better brakes on the car.

also the ball joints were rooted - so also need to split the front end to replace.

So it's at the shop now and in a few weeks ( due to everyone doing their bit) we will have new brakes.

other little things that happened over the weekend

broke the accelerator arm - vibration

the castor nolethane bush disintegrated

always carry a spare set of brake pads

things that need to happen between races tighten nuts

  • rocket cover nuts
  • side plate
  • engine manifold - carby - exhuast
  • tension up wheel nuts
  • general check of engine area for oil leaks - loose stuff

double up the accelerator arms off the main rod  and put a bolt through as they vibrate and crack.

Log Book - Nc

I have also decided that whilst the car is in there I will change over the gearbox to the aussie from celica and get it passed for group NC spec car. this just gives me some ability to have a go an NC when and if i feel the need. It's an itch i need to scratch.

I'll miss that celica box and not looking forward to the aussie oi oi oi

So the changes i need to make for log book;

  • aussie 4 speed
  • interior
  • back seat

will post up some photos as we go.

also need to upgrade my license

Great work Grant, some good advice there too. Sounds like the development of the car is really coming along. Awesome stuff and keep it going, enjoying the read.

Thanks

Update # OK i'll start at 10

Well i have been sorting out some issues with the car and last episode at the track it was not " where's wally " it was " where's the brakes" !

so i have been sort of planning the 4 spot conversion for awhile and was lucky enough to find a set of calipers , and one spare ( 3 in total ).

Getting them clean was a job in it'self and removing the pistons from the housing.

to do this i used a 10mm cup head bolt and then ground it down till it was a knock in fit to the piston cup , I then put a flat bar across and then put a nut on which i wound out.

some come out easy and others were a bit harder - but the came out.

A bit of bling.

I bought the mylar strip for the windscreens and made up a tool to put in. Can recommend that you used the joining clips in the rares pack as any other clip is too wide and dosen't sit right.

I made my own mylar strip installer out of a piece of welding rod - took a few attempts but go there and works a treat .

Stripped the front end and next week will have all the items to go back together

still need the calipers re built which will happen next week as well.

modified the stub axles to take the new calipers + also adjusted them so that CAMBER is now built into the stub axle rather than running a heap of shims.

1 more mill.

Nice work....

Curious to see the stub axle mods for fitting the 4 spots and increasing the camber?

Cheers Sam for that, I would never had thought that the car would end up there on the front website of ARDC  - so thanks for the opportunity and also the other photos you sent. Although 52 is not my number LOL!.

OK so a little bit more of catchy monkey

the roll bar is an early 1970 ish  ( no later than 75 ) one and its a 1 3/4 quarter aluminum grade. There is a difference in the rear strut thickness and after speaking with bond roll bars he can generally tell who made the bar by different welding and brackets also by the type of aluminum. very interesting conversation indeed.

The roll bar is the issue now which will be the major NC issue with CAMS, but am working through this slowly. BUT the bar is certifiable and also has stickers. The funny thing is that a car in NSW which had a roll cage fitted could then move to another state and the following could happen;

smash - re shell - which is acceptable

smash - no tags new inner guard - which is acceptable

CAMS looses records or poor records exist back to this time  - won't admit or records not kept correctly

log book gets lost - human error owner

Cams recorded the log books by chassis or VIN ( to the best of my knowledge ) and being race cars both of these identifiers were easily lost or damaged.

It seems at this ERA there were only a few roll cage builders

I was amazed that after a review of the detailed  photos of the cage he was able to tell me a lot more of the specific time and who made the cage - to the point where by he said X made the cage and then Y welded it because X was a shit tig welder  - HA!

so a bit more.

Half the fun of cars is the story around them. Good stuff on the cage.

And yeah, 52 is because your car represents the ARDC, been around since 1952. Cool shot, though, and I'd take the Torrie over the Ferrari any day... Speak soon.

Well this week hopefully have the inspection for Log book and whilst my fingers are crossed for the cage, it's not a done deal until I submit the paper work to CAMS.

Was hoping to run @ retro speed fest but at this stage will likely be running in regularity again but will be awesome with new brakes and new box so it will hopefully go smoothly.

Getting a medical for Tuesday.

Then will do my license upgrade @ friday practice at Retro. At least i will have the license sorted out.

found a new engine builder last week through referral.

I walked into his little shop and there was pictures of his racing black LJ and all other matter of racing material.

Dead set he has a Wall 1.5x 2 with all bent conrod's busted pistons snapped cranks with a sign saying " offering to the gods" underneath it !!

A bit more.

Grant. Do you already have a HANS Device & appropriate helmet. If you are doing the research, I would be interested in what you choose and where you buy.

Steve

HA - Steve funny you should mention this as when i was a bathurst i spoke at length to the " frontal head restraint device" , HANS is a brand of front head restraint !- to which he kept reminding me of.when i kept referring to his simpson product as HANS !

I have only tried the " simpson" product and it's got the clip around your chest like a harness, it seemed pretty comfortable and then all that happenes was that the clips then went onto your helmet. It seem to leave your neck area and also your shoulder areas  quiet free to move.

There are only two models in the " simpson" and this really only relates to the " material type " being " plastic and carbon fiber " V shaoe which sits between your shoulder blades.is made out of + the more expensive one has padding.

From memory it was $900 and $1200 between the two. ( without helmet)

I have not tried the HANS but the opposing sales rundown I got off the " simpson" bloke is this;

1) it hard to get the correct fit unless you by the super dooper expensive one which is dearer than the simpson top line

2) they are quiet restrictive with the frontal restraints and un comfortable - but yet to try

3)poor range of movement once on

base model one $600 and then it right upto fully adjustable $1600( without helmet)

so you can really see based on price why the lower price hans one is popular so for  around $1100 you get a " frontal head restraint device and also a new helmet"

I really need to go and try back to back and have a another chat to a few blokes - HANS seems to have the market due to being the FIRST maker in the industry  and you can get your helmet on and off without with what seems like less intrusive effort as the brace is attached to the helmet, The simpson bloke did say that this can also happen with his product.

I didn't mind the feel of the Simpson and will probably do some more homework at retro speed fest.

Steve with all the other stuff going on i totally forgot about the helmet that's why i decided to  take a back step with my entry. Getting this inspection for NC has been difficult to arrange and also the work to the car at the shop was delayed as he was running in Bathurst which stuffed up completing the works.

James - had to put some spacers on the front as the wheels were hitting.  The cars complete it just has to stay at the mechanics till the NC inspection. Hopefully this week

The Volvo calipers are a very snug fit. I can fit sprintmasters over mine without spacers but have to use very thin weights for balancing otherwise they get knocked off.

What levels are you looking at racing in?

Fhrs are only required in state level race events or national level tarmac rally events (targa rallies and ralleysprints) according to the manual of motorsports 2015.

Interesting side note I just found, don't get a sfi 38.1 only device, as they are only allowable untill the end of the year. Make sure its fia 8858-2010 or fia 8858-2002. If its either of the fia standards and the sfi standard then that's fine.

Cheers.

NC state level - but am intending. to do a Bucket list of tracks over the next 10 years.- which may include National events.

there are also National events in NSW.

After retro I'll be a bit better informed on the HANS branb.

Thanks Grant & Bomber. Appreciate the comprehensive update. I'm keen to see where you go with a FHR Grant given your desire to race in Group Nc. Not sure if I will venture beyond Regularity, Sprints and Targa Touring but FHRs are a valuable safety device that reduce the likelihood of head and/or neck injuries and may well be worth wearing irrespective of the category competing in.

Thanks for doing the homework guys,

Like Steve I have been pondering too.....

it's not a cheap thing...but in time I guess it will just be like seatbelts and roll cages.....we'll look back on pics of people without them and say WTF?

Before you go WOT FOR... bed in the brake pads/shoes! I fitted new rotors late last year, the pads are only just right, and the new rear shoes still need time.
