B52 - the pullies are finished and will post a few pics once i pick up.

another day another challenge

So one of the last CAMS challenges   to the NC challenge is that you need to undertake the following;

1) online test - done and passed

2) OLT - observed license test - at the track in race conditions

So I've done the test and passed but am off to wakefield tomorrow for an  8 am start and sub 8 degrees start.

I got the disks machine BUT i have not replaced the gearbox - bloody hell i hope it holds up.

the box has a sort of a  cool  SUPERCAR whine - but it's not a good whine for me. So tomorrow it's going to be a easy circulation and easy on the box. i did buy a new box but it's not here yet.

i need to replace the seatbelts and i have also not done this but have the plates and bits to do at the track.

By the way you do not need a frontal head restraint to undertake your OLT

Any way it's pussing down in sydney BRO ! cars on the trailer not tied down

one last challenge and were there.

another day another lesson.

col today i did not feel like a man today  i felt like i was in school. This CAMS olt was pretty tough - there were guys who failed and didn't get their paper work signed.

I was 15 mns late to the drivers briefing with the other guys - to which he politely informed me of all the CAMS rules i had already broken - not a good start to the day. Asked me what my excuse was - I had nothing

It was 5 degrees - i was wearing shorts after running from my car to control tower and sitting down to CAM military camp i was shivering like a leaf  - i was not game to ask if i could go an get another jumper

FARRRK it was cold down there. this whole day was like boot camp = u just had a car.

their pretty full on - no complete any of the sessions and we don't sign you paper work - were the words.- Even if you completed all the activities you still had to sit a verbal exam after the mock race with them in the control tower and only after passing this did they sign the paper work.

Wet track - cold tyre's = plenty of spin offs left right and center.

There was a mixed bunch of blokes doing the OLT one young guy who was the Australian Carting Champion was using a 300K Porsche for his car for OLT. We all linned up on the dummy grid and due to the rain there are three parts of the track that has water streaming across turn 2 in the fish hook and onto the  main straight.

I lined up next to the porsche on the grid and off we went and out of turn 5 after the fishhook the young bloke spun the porsche behind me and off he went into the grass and could not get back on the track to complete the mock race which means he fails the day and they didn't sign the paper work. - expensive mistake - HAA the mighty torana came first and blew off the prosche LOL

The car was getting harder to start and after retro speed fest the alternator gauge ARM fell off and i could not see if it was charging or not - It's not charging as the alternator has shit it's self again.- NOTE get bigger pulley sorted

so the only mechanical failure was the alternator which i will take back to the electrical bloke

the brakes seemed fine and no warping after the day.

It's all over - I got my OLT signed

jesus it was cold

Muscle car masters here i come ! HAAA !

Congrats Grant

You've worked hard. You deserved your OLT on that alone. And you can drive.

I'm booking my seat in the stand with Col for MCM

good story Grant...and good outcome too.!

So what happens now...you are on P plates or similar for a few races?...regardless, you are well on the way. Look forward to MCM.

Now go to your room, and write out "" I will not be late to CAMS drivers meetings"" , 100 times!      lol.

i dunno Col i'll have to read the CAMS manual ! LOL .

Pretty sure that i'm on P's for a 5 meetings and I also have to do 8 hours of track side help which needs to be signed off by the clerk of the course.

I'm a bit over the whole deal at the moment, it's been a pretty full on year with CAMS and regulations. I don't think i will do anything till MCM apart from maintenance on the car.

Being a new car in NC they will probably pick on the car first scrutineer as the log book is empty - but i really want to take the next few months to do the little things.

I'll get some pit shirts made up ha !

seems both you and col went alright in the hill climb - Steve watch that old dog COL, he can get that car going when he needs too .

Adventure before dementia - ,

funny story we do some work for a company who builts dementia homes - do a good job and service the community - found there ad in the local rag and had a laugh about the whole racing thing and doing up cars and getting out there. thought that i would post up there ad to spur on any people who were thinking about getting a dementia through lack of effort or stimulation of your brain.

No sure it's its any ones nanner or missues in the photo - she wouldnt remember anyway - they probably didn't pay her either  ! LOL

but remember - adventure before dementia fellow torana enthusiasts and get your torana or holden 6 out there for a few snapped axles !

bucket it not sure of the update but have been quietly squirreling away on a few items;

I put an order in for a water pump and alternator pulley to be made out of aluminum  - as the alternator shit it self again and it's $200 per time

What i can say is that whilst the " pulley's look bigger " they are actually much lighter in weight from the standard holden offering  - i was very surprised when i compared the finished item.

this also goes with the whole " knife edge crank argument" reciprocating weight  and whilst i acknowledge that the pulleys are not at the crank " you still need to turn them in the engine cycle " via a fan belt.

less reciprocating  weight more power OR better balanced power delivery over the motor OR pull on certain parts which are feeding off the crank.

I also went to a local race company and they wanted very good money for a " standard one size fits all " air scoop. which i though was over priced - so i made up a template out of styrophone and some brackets.

So another local company who only does aluminum welding and fabrication  priced it up and only 3/4 of the cost and a true " specific detailed design fit" to the cars front apron - if anyone needs a set then let me know as i have the blanks and they fit correctly - $130 each.

I got a spare short block of 6/69 GTR for the re build - so where on our way with this as well.

" to knife edge or not to knife edge " this the is question !

staving off dementia one day at a time !

nice work mate.....I'd been taking pics of those brake duct scoops at various meetings...you know..no need to reinvent the wheel, just copy what already works.

Even saw some that were simply 90mm stormwater fittings, heated and melted to shape, and painted matt black..looked pretty good....but not as nice as the ones you posted.

bomber were all low hanging fruit on the life food chain  and your in luck the same price I paid you can pay as well.

keith croft will spin you up a set for his standard price. I'll pm you my email and i will send you his price list for all NC engineering.

As wayne 2 elc's would say " a very smart man" . What he does is right from an engineering point of view.

Keith is great to deal with - but only deals in " arthur Ash "  for payments

they cost me the $130 but the brackets fit the front apron and the chassis rail for support in the right area  and the vent pipe to the rear is shaped in the right angle  Pretty sure that they are happy to make and i can send for you. BUT i would probably only tack the side supports on and the vertical wing you can get welded on up there. but would mark out the position so it's easy.

brookvale aluminum - make the brake ducts - the don't take arthur ash

Is the alternator dying because it is revving harder than normal? I had this situation once in a motor I built.

Have you thought about a larger pulley on the alternator to slow the rpm?

Col - i have the template so it's all good if anyone needs any made in the future and they don't need any mods and clip to the right places in the front apron. will also double as a " summer nats hat ". I just sort of just spent about 3 hours just preparing the template.

glenn the pulley in the first photo up the page is the larger pulley ( flat one ) which i'm using - it's cheaper than breaking alternators in the long run and much lighter than the OEM holden one.

When you break alternators, did it bend the cooling fan blades out of shape?

Jon - it just stopped charging the battery so i have not pulled out of the car and the gauge had lost the arm so i had no idea it was not charging.

I also need to putt the gauge out and get the arm put back on.so it reads correctly

I have been on ebay and there are a few different models around eg 55 amp 85 amp, they are all different prices. some as low as $145

A bosch one is $250 ?

the car now runs an electrical fuel pump and if there is no charge the fuel pumps doesn't work.and the car stops

Anyone have any ideas on what's the difference with the alternators and AMP charging before i buy one.

G
