Looks like bearing isn't going to fit the inner tube & the shaft has some wear where the bush sat,so with the wear of the bush & shaft it is too sloppy for my liking even after I put the bush on an unworn part of the shaft.

I'll put up some pics tomorrow & see what we can come up with.I'll see if the part Dattoman mentioned will fit,if not I was thinking of seeing if a nolathane bush will fit if a suitable size can be found.

So the outer bearing is too big? This is why i went one size smaller and made up the aluminium holder.
Good to see some pics.

you were saying there is a groove worn in the shaft? How wide is this groove? will a ball bearing of a smaller diameter cover the groove?? Will the groove effect the bearing in other words?

There is some wear on the shaft where it sat in the bush,I tapped the bush further into the inner tube so that the bush was on unworn part of the shaft,a lot less play but the bush has too much wear also.

The 19mm bearing for the shaft fits good, barely any play, even better on the unworn part of the shaft.Annoying part is trying to find a bearing or a bush that fits the shaft yet sits in the inner tube to support the shaft.

There is like a 1mm gap between the bush & shaft, most of the wear being in the bush.

Either got to find another bearing to fit shaft & tube or try to find a bush to fit, nolathane maybe.

Does the column look like it will take the same mod as yours?

I should be able to get another column if needed but chances are it too will need the same fix sooner or later.

Basically the bearing sleave welds on the tube.
The sleave is approx 15mm wide, or approx the width of the bearing, come to think of it the sleave should be a few mm wider than the bearing to make room for welding.
The sleave as you can see will step down in diameter to be the same size as the column tube.
The column tube should be cut down the same amount as the width of the sleeve.

Your not allowed to do any cutting or welding with steering components even if it is the tube are we?

Is the lc base the same or at least similar to the lj column?

This thing is really holding the car back atm.

Mine is cut, i dont think it will be an issue, but you may want to let your engineer know about it.
Mine is cut and the engineer didnt notice but theyre all different i guess.
I think it is the same as mine only mine is already cut, what is the part which is smaller diameter than the column tube? is that the bush?

other alternative is use the same thing as what i have. Undersize ball bearing and a spacer/bearing holder like mine.

Update status:Got nolathane bush of Allsprings Moorebank part no.425U.($3.50) inside diameter is 19.5mm for shaft(19mm) outer circumference 33mm(tube is 31mm).I'll linish the outer part to fit it in the tube & hopefully it will crush the inside part a little for a better fit on the shaft,if not the search will continue for another bush.

Wish me luck.

Hi all, reviving a 18 year old post, I know. I have a bit of play at the bottom of my LC steering column..

GTRBOYY or anyone else, what bush works best to soak up the play between the bottom of the steering column and the steering rack column as per the above pic shown above. GTRBOYY,if you see this, how did you go all those years ago with this:- Got nolathane bush of Allsprings Moorebank part no.425U.($3.50) inside diameter is 19.5mm for shaft(19mm) outer circumference 33mm(tube is 31mm)

I may have mentioned it before, or perhaps on another thread.

If you cant get a bearing with the exact size you want, you can get them ground to the right size.

I needed a bearing for a Norton gearbox many years ago.

Could get the right OD but not the right ID.

The bearing supplier, CBC I think at the time, had the bearing ID hollow ground to the right size for the job.

It wasnt a huge extra expense on the cost of the bearing, and turnaround time was a couple of days.

Im thinking that getting a bearing ground might be cheaper than what is involved in getting the shaft turned down.

Unless of course the column is already dismantled.

Cheers

Rob

Hi mate,

Got a nolathane bush that was meant for some 4wd leaf spring & Dr Terry put it on a lathe machined it to suit column & shaft...can't recall sizes but was tad tight on shaft to turn & squeaked for awhile but got better over time....top bearing fairly sure bought from Rare Spares.

Was annoying putting it back together on my own.

I think lc & early kingies had plastic bush then lj & hq got bearings?????

LJ has a plastic bushing. HQ, J, X etc got a ball bearing mounted in a plastic adaptor.
