Motor is a mild 308, alloy radiator with thermo fans , never gets hot and has a cleanable filter in the top hose.
Was driving it all day yesterday and it did it once, then not again for the rest of the day.

Do you a have recovery radiator cap fitted for over flow system?

so when the Motor cools down again, the overflow bottle allows the coolant to go back into the Engine.

My 253 use to do this. It just started doing it one day a few years ago. I bought a holden header tank from rare spares and fitted it on the overflow hose. Since then I have had no problems and the radiator is always full.

Not one hundred percent sure , it's the cap that came with the alloy radiator

Hi Wayne,
Not one hundred percent sure , it's the cap that came with the alloy radiator
Pulled mine apart to show the bit's and pieces,
now the main part is the centre nipple/valve which opens and closes,
depending on the engine's coolant expansion or contraction:-

so the main big seal opens to let out the pressure, and the little one allows the coolant back in.
last picture is depressed to open the little one

There's a good chance that there isn't anything wrong at all. Most of the time, if the radiator has been completely filled, the engine will spit out a cupful or two once it gets hot enough. If you keep replacing this excess water it'll keep spitting it out. Next time it does it don't top it up but monitor the level after each drive. If it keeps losing water you have a problem but if it stays the same it was probably just overfull.

Does it occur when driving?
Or only due to heat soak after switch off & when stopped?
Can you hear it boiling in the above listed situation?
In what temp range does your thermostat operate?
AFAIR, when the ADR 27 emission controls included hotter thermostats, a coolant overflow/catch tank was usually fitted..

Exactly. As the coolant heats up it expands, and you (should) have a radiator cap that is rated to a certain pressure. Once the expanding coolant exceeds this pressure, the cap releases excess which either goes to the overflow bottle when fitted, or on the ground. When it cools again it contracts back - if you have a suitable recovery cap it has a secondary valve allowing return of coolant from a suitable recovery overflow bottle. If the overflow is mounted too low or does not have a hose below the coolant level then it won't work and your radiator will not refill itself as the coolant cools. There's a good chance that there isn't anything wrong at all.
Without a (working) recovery system its not unusual for the top tank to be half empty, and this is not a problem for vehicles like Toranas whose cooling systems were designed this way. Bear in mind that an overflow/catch bottle is not necessarily a recovery system.

I would agree with a non-overflow system have some coolant missing all the time and stay's at that level, thank's. +1 ^ ^^

Went and brought a none recovery cap , but the rubber seal is just a fraction to small.
Bit stumped now as to what cap will fit

If the rad is designed for a coolant overflow recovery system, maybe you should fit one?

Are you near any 1/2 decent Repco-type place with a helpful/knowledgeable old bloke behind the counter?
Could take your cap in & ask him to do you a suitable non-recovery cap replacement..
