Hi guys

I need some advice from some of you guys who work with etch primers more often than I do.

The car will be stripped of paint and rust and then I want to etch prime it. I've been told that wattyl make a great super etch in single PAC. After the ETCH then I will prime after all repairs.

Will 2 PAC primers paint over single PAC super etch by wattyl? Or do I have to use a 2 PAC etch in order to paint 2 PAC primer on top?

Here is the data sheet to it I'm just confused.

Thanks

Do you hqve any idea how ling a post would be if you mentioned every single product individualy?

Single pack phosphorous etches are just that. Two pack phosphorous ethes are just that, two pak epoxy primers are just that. Polyurethanes are just that. Polyesters are just that.

Gday MRGMH, ill try and give you a straight answer from what I know......If it was me I wouldnt paint 2k over single pac etch of any description.....yes you can do it but in my experience I would say 2k epoxy to bare metal is about as good as it gets for protection under your paint job.....I would dare say that only E coat would probably be better because its electrostaticlly applied and can get into every crevice on the car.

Epoxy also has the added benefit of being able to have filler applied straight over it so your repairs can be made much easier......wouldnt like to fill over etch...not good.

Epoxy is water proof....single pac etch is not.

So i would use single pac etch to coat the bare metal while prepping the car ie rust repairs, bare metaling, sand throughs as it will keep surface rust at bay for a while.....  but when metal work repairs are finished you can just just wipe the etch off with thinners and your left with bright clean metal ready for epoxy.

As for wattyl mmmm never used it...and probably wont.......I use PROTEC  EPOTEC 408 epoxy....great stuff.

This is what it looks like once the car is epoxied inside and out.

Hope this helps

cheers

Al

Good one Al,

we do leave the 426, but you say to take away when ready for the 408, thank's for that.

Lol, i forgot about that pick Dave. Need to print a few out me thinks.

Also, yes, take the 426 off before you hit it with 408.

MRGMH: Sorry if my innitial reply offended you a bit, but there has been SOOOOO many threads on this topic, and as i said, when it all boils down, a 1k etch is a 1k etch. Wattyl may be better than this or that, but its still a 1k etch. Its not going to be as good as a 2k epoxy.

Same goes with all paint systems in general, for a given product, ask 10 different people get 10 different opinions. Generally with the professional advice i give I generally quote Protec systems as i've used them in a very harsh enviroment for over eight years, I know the system and i know how it is going to perform. I have used other systems and liked them for various reasons, but my basic knowlege base lays with Protec.

I like to think my opinion in that strict sense may be a bit better than the next lad who goes "my mate sprayed his car with protec primers and got rust....." As these generic comments we all face on internet forums are full of questions, that for some reason never get answered.

So with this arguement we can assume (I hope!) that a product is only as good as the one who applies it, and in general, unless you buy your paint from supercheap or the like, there all pretty comparable as long as your talking the same kind of product, so 1k etch, 1k primer surfacer, 1k Acrylic Epoxy, Acrylic Lacquer, Enamel,  2k etch, 2k epoxy, 2k polyester, 2k urethane, 2k Acrylic Polyurethane, 2k Enamel Polyurethane, etc.

There all going to do a similar job if you stick to a reasonable brand, and a product which is superior in that list will generally be superior to an inferior product from any of the other companies.

slar pretty well summed it up.

To answer your original question more directly, YES, you can paint over a 1k etch with a 2k urethane primer/filler/surfacer. No worries. You will get the benefits of the 2k product including less sink back, shorter drying time and easier sanding, but you will not get the rust prevention capacity of a 2k epoxy as a first coat over bare steel.

Why you would do this, i have no idea, as 2k epoxy's dont contain volatile organic isocyanates anyway, so there safe to spray in your garage/shed.

Cheers.

Prolly not the thread for it, but im wondering if we should change our agreement to be more equal, ie we select a drink and go drink for drink with it, instead of bringing two different poisons.....

Cheers.
