From the British book 'John Player Motorsport Yearbook 1974' P. 298;

An interesting bit about the Colin Bond HDT Rally Torana competing on the international scene.

"Like Australia's Southern Cross Rally...the Heatway is the country's one chance of ranging its best local drivers against the top internationals. But with Hannu Mikkola & Jim Porter entered for the 1973

event there was little doubt about the outcome, or so it seemed.

Australian Colin Bond, driving a Holden Torana XU1 with co-driver George Shepherd, was quicker than Mikkola on a number of ice stages, & it was only after Bond had gone off the road & dropped to 27th

on the 1st night that  the Finn could relax, "& drive at 95%".

After the event, in which the Australian worked through the field to a final 4th place, Mikkola made

himself popular with the local press by saying that if Bond went to Europe - he could quickly get up amongst the top five."

Too bad the HDT Rally squad never got a go in the WRC, like the Group A touring cars in the `80s..

Any idea which car that was?

Would that have been the ARC winner from '71, AKA Saggy Sarah?

Or a different car?

Dave, yes Saggy was green but not like in that pic I don't think.

Yes Sagman does have Saggy Sarah, but it's not the same car as in this rally.

If you want to find out more about Saggy there are some good vids on YouTube with Larry as the star.

Hi guys , couldn't quite get the rego number on Bondy's car but it could have been LGL-443 , i suspect it was one of the silver cars ............ when Colin was looking at the car we were discussing the Heatway , Colin thought one of the green rally cars had done the '72 Heatway , we were trying to work out whether it was BJD-440 or BOI-812 that went ...... i should ask George Shepheard as i reckon he will know for sure...

Don't know if you would be interested but recently found a video on Youtube about the 1973 Southern Cross rally done years ago by Jim Sullivan and Barry Nancarrow featuring quiet a bit of Colin Bond and George Shepard in KZR-545 also showing the toranas of Stewart McLeod and Matt Phillip. Mega viewing for people who really enjoyed that era of Australian Rallying

of the XU1 at 19:50 into the Video, amazing.

yeah if you watch it at one point I think you could see the corner of the windscreen poking up on the passenger side on the bottom I thought this was reason for the clamps
